"Arm Mass"

By Alan Palmieri
Natural Bodybuilding Guru

A product of Bodybuildings Golden Era, the 60s, I can reflect back on mistakes made in nutrition as well as training. In those days we trained each body part three times per week and it was not uncommon for our workouts to last three hours or so. Somewhere along the line I broke away from what was then considered the “norm” and started to listen to my body and train more instinctively. I am not genetically gifted and I recognized early on that although I loved bodybuilding, I would never stand on a dais and accept a trophy for winning a major title. For me that was okay, it was the training I loved anyway. My goal was self improvement, not a major title. The sound of the iron banging together, the sweat, the pump, the feel of performing a rep in perfect form, those were the important things to me.

Then, before the 60s, today and into the... [Read More]

Anabolic Steroids: What Urologists Should Know

Anabolic Steroids: What Urologists Should Know

In 1994, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Household Survey on Drug Abuse revealed that nearly 1.1 million Americans—0.5% of the adult population—said they had used anabolic steroids. The youngest users are largely found in middle schools and high schools nationwide. Urologic problems can begin after just one cycle of use, eventually driving the person to seek professional evaluation and treatment. (The NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse defines “cycling” as taking the steroids—sometimes at doses as much as hundreds of times higher than recommended—for six to 12 weeks or longer, stopping for several weeks, and then starting again. Another commonly used method of steroid use, “stacking,” en-tails taking several different types of steroids at high doses.)

Although the term “anabolic steroids” has negative connotations, it... [Read More]

A Look at Steroid Contradictions

by Brent Allen, MS, MBA

The perfect way to open this article is to tell you about my conversations with the many university and college Health/Physical Education department heads I talked to in order to guest lecture at their respective institutions. I would tell them they may not want me to lecture because I have a slightly controversial approach. I'm 100% objective and honest about the positive and negative effects of steroids. Upon reflection, I realized there is something seriously wrong when objectivity and honesty are controversial!

One of the major reasons for the controversy surrounding the steroid topic is very simple. There have been "many" (and I do emphasize many) different "highly" respected degreed individuals, official sports/medical organizations, and even well known steroid experts that have changed their stand literally 180 degrees, on selected... The Truth About Steroids And Sports

The Truth About Steroids And Sports

Steroids have been much in the news these days. And some of the best-known athletes have been or are about to be questioned about their alleged use of the drugs. So what is behind what seems the sports scandal of the decade? Our Sunday Morning Cover Story is reported now by Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN.

So we all agree that steroids are bad, right? They've brought suspicion and shame.

Congress has just opened a new round of hearings into the anabolic steroids debate.

Former Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch testified on Friday, "I want baseball to be clean."

Pitcher Roger Clemens is set to appear on Tuesday.

They're among a number of players facing questions over former Senator George Mitchell's recent report linking 89 major leaguers to performance-enhancing drugs.

So it makes... [Read More]

Chris Benoit Tragedy - Anabolic Steroids, Aggression & Violence

Chris Benoit Tragedy - Anabolic Steroids, Aggression & Violence

by Jack Darkes, PhD

The Chris Benoit Murder/Suicide - What It Can and Cannot Tell Us

In events like the Chris Benoit family tragedy the alleged perpetrator’s characteristics inevitably suggest hypotheses and the search for confirming evidence begins. Anabolic steroids or anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) were blamed before prescription AAS were found, as researchers and commentators alike called forth the popular AAS-‘roid rage connection. Such narrow reasoning backward from the act and actor to the cause shows that jumping to conclusions can seem like reasonable inference. One commentator even noted her preference for blaming steroids over accepting that a person could commit this act, as if assuming that, in the absence of some drug influence, such an act would be a conscious decision, that the only possible causes... Hushmail had a hole...Feds made them exploit it.

Encrypted E-Mail Company Hushmail Spills to Feds

Hushmail, a longtime provider of encrypted web-based email, markets itself by saying that "not even a Hushmail employee with access to our servers can read your encrypted e-mail, since each message is uniquely encoded before it leaves your computer."

But it turns out that statement seems not to apply to individuals targeted by government agencies that are able to convince a Canadian court to serve a court order on the company.

A September court document from a federal prosecution of alleged steroid dealers reveals the Canadian company turned over 12 CDs worth of e-mails from three Hushmail accounts, following a court order obtained through a mutual assistance treaty between the U.S. and Canada. The charging document alleges that many Chinese wholesale steroid... [Read More]

PUMPING Up Steroid Hysteria

PUMPING Up Steroid Hysteria

by Patrick Cox

Perhaps because I lagged well behind my peer group, physically at least, until I was well into my twenties, most of my childhood associations with sports are unpleasant. The shortest and most physically maladroit kid in class after class after class, I was the perennial last-pick when teams formed on playgrounds or PE classes.

Today, my eyes still glaze over when friends talk playoffs and draft picks, and the only games I really care about are those my eleven-year-old son participates in. I suppose it is ironic, therefore, that a serious car accident, while in college, has forced me into a lifelong study of exercise physiology, kinesiology and other sports-related sciences. As sufficient muscle mass seems to be the only alternative to a spinal brace and handfuls of painkillers, I have found myself following or involved in discussions with athletes and trainers more... Anabolic/Androgenic Steroids - A Basic Description

Anabolic/Androgenic Steroids - A Basic Description

This article will attempt to describe, in layman's terms, the fate of Anabolic/Androgenic Steroids (AAS) in the human body. The intent is to look at steroids from a general view, not to describe the different individual steroids. Of course, the author does not condone the use of steroids by anyone not under the care and supervision of a qualified medical professional.

TYPES OF STEROIDS

Anabolic/Androgenic Steroids can be roughly classified into two types, oral and injectable. When you eat food or consume anything orally, the great majority of the ingested substances pass through the liver prior to entering the bloodstream. For this reason, "injectable" AAS cannot be taken orally because the liver will deactivate the steroids in this "first pass". Deactivation in the liver usually involves the addition of one or... The Anti-Fat Shot
Oct 25, 2007 - 12:28 PM - by grnmchn
The Anti-Fat Shot

Anti-fat shots take a jab at your flab.

In the procedure often referred to as Lipodissolve, injectable fat removal, or injection lipolysis, a mixture of drugs is injected into a site on the body where someone wants to reduce fat. The shot can theoretically be used just about anywhere, whether it’s on your love handles, thighs, chin, abs, arms, or under your eyes.

Reality Check
The injections are legal but unregulated.

By law, any physician can ask a pharmacy to combine the two drugs (phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate) which together make up this anti-fat formula. But the pharmacies that customize such drugs, called compounding pharmacies, are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has issued cautionary statements, but they won’t be overseeing the pharmacies any time soon. Doctors who order the shots and administer them... [Read More]
