Father Facing Jail After Giving Steroids to Skater Son
TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- A Florida man who admitted giving his son steroids to improve his in-line skating performance has asked a federal judge to postpone his sentencing.
James Gahan faces five years in federal prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Monday. In a motion filed New Year's Eve in federal court in Tampa, Fla., Gahan's lawyer said he would like more time to assist police and federal agents in investigations of steroid distribution, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported. "He would prefer not to see other fathers follow his footsteps," lawyer Thomas Ostrander said. Gahan, now in the Hernando County Jail, is estranged from his son and has lost his home to bankruptcy, the Sentinel said. Corey Gahan, now 17, was stripped of his skating titles and the indoor speed record at 1,500 meters for his age group after failing a drug test administered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. At the time, he was internationally ranked. Gahan is believed to be the first parent convicted of giving a child steroids.
