PBS' 'Secrets of the Dead' examines cost of East Germany's doping

"A disturbing examination of East Germany's systematic use of steroids and testosterone in the 1970's to bolster its athletes' medal counts in the Olympics and other international competitions."

During the 1970s, the women of East Germany came out of nowhere to dominate a staggering number of events. There must have been a secret weapon fueling this sudden and rapid rise to dominance.

I watched it...pretty shocking to see how manly some of the women got. The one thing that surprised me is just how much androgen some of these girls were getting fed; one of the doctors mentions that one east german shot-putter was on higher doses than Ben Johnson was before he got caught! Other parts of it were all to predictable, but still worth watching IMO.

I saw the whole thing and I agree with the quote.

I watched it last night. Its very sad what those coaches did to those young girls. I have no problem at all with grown men on steroids, but pumping androgens into 13-15 year old girls pisses me off. Those coaches and scientist should be beat to death. They ruined many of those girls lives.
