MMA's Barbie tests positive for steroids

SACRAMENTO — Brazil's Carina Damm, dubbed mixed martial arts' Barbie, has been banned from fighting for a year after testing positive for steroids.
The California State Athletic Commission said Friday that Damm tested positive for nandralone after her 11-second knockout win over Lashonda Knox on April 3 in Los Angeles.
She is the first female athlete to test positive for steroids in California, according to Bill Douglas, the commission's acting assistant executive officer.
Damm's suspension runs through April 2, 2009. She was also fined $2,500.
Testing, conducted at a WADA-certified lab in Laval, Que., showed a count of 37.9 nanograms per millilitre which exceeds the threshold of 2 ng/ml.
Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk was suspended for a positive nandralone test after his UFC 73 win last July over Hermes Franca, who also failed a drug test. Sherk, who denied doping, had a reported level of 12 ng/ml.
Damm, who now goes by the nickname "Beauty But The Beast," has a record of 9-3 and competed at Bodog's Vancouver card in August 2007.
The five-foot-four 120-pounder trained in Japan and appeared clothed in a pictorial on fighting women for the Japanese edition of Playboy.
"I'm not just a pretty face," she said in a 2006 interview with sherdog.com. "I have talent also."
Her brother Rodrigo also fights professionally.
