Probe leans on trainer's wife Conspiracy angle in Bonds' case

The federal prosecutors who indicted Barry Bonds on perjury charges have targeted the wife of Greg Anderson, the former Giants outfielder's longtime personal trainer.

Two sources who requested anonymity said Nicole Gestas, 38, received a letter from the Bonds prosecution team last year informing her she was the target of a federal-conspiracy investigation.

Gestas, who works as a personal trainer on the Peninsula, is the wife of Anderson, who was Bonds' boyhood friend and who supervised his weight training through much of Bonds' career with the Giants.

In 2005, Anderson pleaded guilty to steroid dealing in the BALCO sports-doping scandal and served three months in prison. In 2006 and 2007, Anderson served an additional 18 months in prison for contempt of court after he refused to testify before the federal grand jury that was investigating Bonds' suspected steroid use.
