I live in a small-ish city where it just isn't worth going to bars. If I decide to have a few, it's with a good friend or two at a private club that's very laid-back. The only time I have big nights out are when I'm visiting friends in Toronto.

same here, it is a friday night and i am talking to you guys. LOL I am such a homebody. my girl is having her bridal shower tomorrow and will be whooping it up on the town and I can't even think of one fun thing besides reading or going to the gym.

There are other things to do besides going to clubs and bars. You might laugh, but on Valentine's day we went bowling with another couple and we brought the kids. Afterwards we went back to their house for a little while before heading home. It was a very enjoyable night! You can also go to plays which are inexpensive unless you're in NYC. How about inviting friends over to watch a movie or have dinner? Get tickets to a game (baseball, hockey, whatever you enjoy). Many of the bookstores with coffee shops are open later on weekends too. In warmer states like here in FL, miniature golf is open late all year round. Of course, there's always going out for dinner with a friend or s/o, you can try out one new place a month to make it something more eventful.
There's pleanty to do if you don't want to sit home every weekend.
