Half-ton man drops 321 pounds, and still counting
http://www.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/08/11....ap/index.html
![]() SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) -- A man who once weighed more than half a ton has lost 321 pounds under the care of a team of doctors and hopes to lose 450 pounds more. Patrick Deuel, 42, of Valentine, Nebraska, weighed 1,072 pounds when he was admitted to Sioux Falls' Avera McKennan Hospital eight weeks ago. Deuel, who is just under 6 feet tall, is on a 1,200 calorie-a-day diet. "If we hadn't gotten him here, he'd be dead now," said Fred Harris, Deuel's lead doctor. The former restaurant manager has been bedridden since last fall. He has battled heart failure, thyroid problems, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension and arthritis, and needed help just to roll over in bed. "Until recently, I wasn't able to see any light at the end of the tunnel," he said Monday from his hospital bed. A group known as the League of Human Dignity helped arrange for Deuel to be driven to a local livestock scale, where he could be weighed. According to the Guinness World Records Web site, the record for heaviest man in the world is 1,397 pounds (629 kilograms), held by Jon Brower Minnoch of Bainbridge, Washington, who died in 1983. Deuel, who has battled weight problems all his life and blames his condition in part on genetics, said it took months to find a hospital. Hospitals closer to his home balked at admitting him, he said. "I got scared because I couldn't help him anymore, and I didn't know who would help him," said his wife, Edith. Harris said Deuel's care could cost millions of dollars, much of which the hospital may have to cover. Officials found a special ambulance, and hospital workers joined two beds to accommodate Deuel. One of Deuel's goals is to walk out of the hospital. He also wants to go to a Nebraska Cornhuskers football game, and just take a walk with his wife. "Even though he's faced negativity all these years, he's not a negative person," Edith Deuel said. "He's almost always been able to stay bubbly and make jokes and be happy." |

I feel sorry for him too, but then it also makes you wonder how he let it get to that point to start with.

I hope his body is strong enough to hang in there for him to lose the remaining weight. Hopefully he doesnt gain it all back and die like that one guy did.

I feel sorry for him in a way and I hope he looses the weight. With that said, if you ask me, when you hit 400-500lbs you would think the guy would have said to himself, "hey, somethings wrong here" lol. It would be alot easier to help him at 400lbs than at 1000lbs. I just dont get it. I realize he may have bad genetics but 1000lbs is from genetics. lol

dude, it's mean, but i dunno if I can feel sorry for a guy that weighs over 1000 lbs... I mean you have to TRY to get that freakin fat... I don't think you could just be lazy and get that big. It'd take some effort

I too feel sorry. The only thing I have a problem with is his eating and WHO has been feeding him? Obviously he couldn't make his own food or get up to help himself, so why the hell did his wife/family feed him the way they did. Im sure he wasnt SERVED grilled chicken and vegetables everyday....so partly to blame should be the people bringing him rediculous amounts of bad food.

How the fuck can you guys feel sorry for this lazy, self-destructive piece of shit. I don't want to offend anyone, but this is totally ridiculous. The guy can't roll over in bed by himself, yet he loses 321 pounds by just cutting his calories back to 1200/day. How many calories/day was he consuming to balloon to over 1000lbs? Genetics? Bullshit, he was sedentary piece of garbage that ate everything in sight. In his lifetime, he has probably eaten more food than 12 average weight people will eat in their lifetime. What do you think will happen if he does lose it? He will be released from the hospital and gain most of it back within 2 years - thats my prediction. There is no disease here, no genetic disorder, just some fat fuck with no will power. I wonder, if he couldn't even roll over in bed by himself, who was feeding him all the food it would take to get to that size. Probably his wife - bitch should go to jail for encouraging his gluttony.

I agree..
I agree that he deserves credit for trying to lose the weight.. But, seriously, when its gotten that far out of control, you really have to wonder what the hell he was thinking.. Even if he gets down to 300lbs, he is going to be fucked for life from the extra skin and shit that will be hanging from his body. Don't these people think about this shit as they are pounding the food? I just can't imagine it..
I am SO pissed that I have stretch marks from BB.. I realize they are a scar, and going to be there forever.. And people always tell me they are a mark of the hard work that I have put in.. But I still wish they were not there.. This poor guy is going to have marks like your would not belive. Its just sad. He would probably be less scared if he had been caught in a fucking chemical fire. At least then they can put the skin back on you. Its just going to be hideous when this guy gets to a normal weight. He will certainly need a full body lift, and his arms and legs done, at the very least, just to make himself look passable. Once you get that heavy there really is no coming back.. Puma

Then guy is obviously sick. He must have made a string of bad choices to get him started but a person can become a victim of his/her own compulsive behavior to the point of totally losing control. I predict that if he he lives through the weight-loss process he will gain it all back and die if he does no get some serious help for his head. To call the guy a piece of shit is out of line.

A lot of people blame their genetics and what have you but at the end of the day if calories in > calories out you will get fat. Genetic susceptibility or not.... So, you can either reduce calories in through diet and/or increase calories out by exercise.

I wonder what he will look like after he loses all the weight. His skin has got to be so stretched out. Anyone remember Austin Powers 3? His neck might end up looking like a vagina.
