and then I heard a pop in my neck

I was doing back last night and was just doing some barbell shrugs to finish off the Traps when on the 8th rep of the last set, there was a loud pop sound from the back of my neck..... I knew something was wrong and unloaded the weights. Within ten minutes my neck and right side of my upper back tightened up to where I had to sleep on the floor without a pillow..

anybody else ever have this and what is the best approach to dealing with it? I iced it right away, but today I have very little mobility in my neck.

I called the doctor and they can't get me in until next Wed. afternoon.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
V

Call the doctor's office back and tell them that you are not mobile and you really really need to see him/her immediately. Usually, they have slots tucked away in their schedule for such "emergencies," they just don't like to give them away easily.

I have rarely had an instance where they absolutely said they couldn't see me if I can convince them that I am really in pain.

Otherwise, see if you can get in to another doctor in the same office.

I would go see a chiropractor. They would get you in right away for sure.

I agree-chiropractors are the way to go for back problems. I have used them many times and I always feel a ton better after seeing them a couple times--and they will get you in right away. Good luck with that man-that sounds like it sucks.

Sounds like an injury to the nerves that run from your cervicle vertabrae which is responsible for muscles (upper trapezious) which in turn elevate the scapula during a shrug.

I'd suggest some anti-inflamatories to help reduce any swelling caused by injury. Icing the area for the first 48 - 36 hrs. is usually advised and then heat after that.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT EVER SEE A CHIRO FIRST FOR A NECK OR BACK INJURY!!! This is seriously the worst mistake someone can make if they really have a spinal comprimise. They are not as well trained as physicians, especially Orthos, for detecting potnetial life threatening injuries.

I made a post over at MMI about this sort of thing. Here is the post...

Spinal injuries

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it's important that we understand that we have the potential to injure ourselves while lifting and also, to those of you using gear, the risk is increased. I wanted to point out some symptoms that could be a serious sign of injury. These are not meant to diagnose or use as a tool for treatment route.

A muscular spasm often occurs with movement when a muscle has been injured. A spinal injury causes pain all of the time, even without movement. So, there is a good possibility you can tell what you hurt.

Other things to look for...

Shooting pain traveling down an extremity
Numbness or tingling distally (in your toes or finger tips.
Strength deficits in extremities

The above can be caused by spinal injury. You should seek medical attention if you are having any of the above symptoms. In most cases, it takes blunt trauma to induce an injury to the actual bone, but it is not impossible to injure it from lifting extremely heavy weights.

On the other hand, the disc can easily herniate or sometimes even rupture. These are treatable, but it takes a long road to recovery and possibly invasive measures."
