What Makes One a 'Vet' or a 'Guru'?
So I sit here, at 6:22am, before work, reading various boards and articles associated with these boards. I wonder, who writes these? Even more, I wonder if its posted on a message board, does "bump, good info." really mean its good info? Or is the person a 'vet' and it is assumed that he or she always shares good info. I read a myriad of misleading or total misinformation in a lot of threads, posts and articles. Now let me say, I am certainly not the end all of knowledge and theres people here who probably know far more than I do but albeit nutrition, supplements, anabolics, training, etc. some people are truly confused. I was browsing the "largest bodybuilding site on the net!" this morning and read and article by "one of the industries leading gurus" and pointed out at least 4 inaccurate statements made. Not to mention the artcile cite exactly NO references. SO, what makes this guy a guru? His time spent on the boards? his educational background? And what makes a vet on these boards? Who exactly judges that? is it self-proclaimed or is it earned? Ive been on the boards for awhile, since around 1997, not always posting but browsing.... and I must say, the TRUE vets are long gone, now it seems everyone is a vet..... some one help me out and let me in on what defines a guru or a vet?

when they have a bugs name I think....
I agree with you though YJ, everyone is an expert now. I think it has more to do with the recent generation that was brought up thinking that whatever they had to say had importance and couldn't be wrong as long as they said "Something". People are taught that just having an opinion is knowledge. They are taught nothing of reasoning, logic or logical fallacies in the arena of debating knowledge. |

like for me thats why im carefull of who i take advice from. I dont take advice from everyone. Like in my gym, theres always these guys telling me Im doing the workouts all wrong, but when I think about it "Its working on me" and Im bigger than them. But your right YJ

not being a 'vet,' or a 'guru,' i'll take what i can from your comments...
Thanx YJ, for reminding us to not necessarilly listen to someones advice simply because they are big, claim to be big, or have those two words underneath their name Sometimes i read things that make me wonder, but not having the knowledge & educational background myself to refute these things, i simply ignore them. One of the first questions i ever asked on this board was regarding NO2, and it was quickly dismissed as being useless. When i asked for reasoning & sources etc., YJ posted a substantial list of reading so i was assured i was not only taking peoples antecdotal advice. that's what i like about this board. but i'm also left wondering about other people. i know some jackasses at the gym who would bang their heads into the wall if i told them it would make them bigger... i can imagine the ideas that could be put in their heads by someone who simply proclaims to be something they are not. ...everything with a grain of salt...

I only post on a couple of boards and I am relatively new to this game but what I've seen is this: On each board you have one or two KNOWN names on both that board and on at least one other, these people are the ones who I have found consistently back there information up with science and should be the "vets" "gurus", then you have the mods who are local to that board and who don't really offer much outside of what is previously stated using a search function... not to bash on these guys, I am sure they know loads more than I do, I am just saying it seems like in general they repeat more and know less than say a true vet or guru who can break down the science behind every scenario and explain exactly HOW and WHY it works. Just my 2 cents, I could be completely off

what is considered a guru to u all?
To me its someone with years of knowledge and expericence. I noticed this from the gym i go to. The owner is an awesome friend and bodybuilder. Well known throughout Mexico and South Texas, hes competed through the 60's-through 2003. Also competed in the Mr. Universe in the 70's. For his age, hes in awesome shape. Lots of knowledge too. Ever since i joined that gym, ive leanred alot and its a old school gym, my type of gym. Theres this trainer at my gym who trains people. I asked the owner about him, he just laughs telling me that the trainer has "never competed, barely works out, not certified, and pretends to be a know it all", laughing while telling me this. I am in better shape than this trainer dude. I usually take adivce from the people who are older than me and compete cause only thier body could tell, as in them knowing what works and what doesnt. I could have this guy who just works out about 25 years in age giving me advcie and this guy in his 30's whos competed, who's advice would i take, the 30 year olds. Ive gotten alot of bad advice throught when I started working out. From eating alot, coaches and people never told me what to eat, just to eat alot. So I ate alot and guess what, i didnt gain a single pound of muscle just fat. Also when I would hear guys telling me to take Creatine. Yeah it works but with proper diet and training. Well again bad advice, and i never gained an ounce. I gotta admit when I was 18 I was a little hard/thick headed. I was one who tried steroids in an early age. I wanted to get big fast. So I took it and nothing. I wondered what was wrong. Thier steroids, they should work, well no one told me about diet and pct. I took 1ml of sostenon a week for 2 weeks and then switched to 1lm 50mgs of deca for 2 more weeks. I got watery but not big. Then the water went away and I wondered. Even a DOCTOR from Mexico, recommended me Sostenon to add size on me. Well the fucker was wrong, just wanted me to purchase him some and him make money. But from all my mistakes ive made from when i was 13 till now 23, ive leanred what works for me and what doesnt. Im not trying to say I know alot cause I still got a long way to go but ive leanred alot. Thats why when I ask for advice whether its here or here at home, at time I question the advice. Here at home at the gym I dont ask everyone for advice, only people I know with the experience and who compete. Ive has smaller guys than me weighing 150-160 pound dudes telling me im doing the exersices wrong, when I was like 220. I just blow them off and say "oh yeah". But here on the boards Ive leanred alot too, I never knew about pct. I never knew about cycling, and the proper diet. I gotten bashed when I first started here in 2000 for asking diet advice and on what i was eating. But I learned. Also what helps here alot is the Member Pictures Section. You can actually see whos advice your getting, which is very inspirational and motivational. Without these boards I dont think there would have been any good advice and we would have to be going through magazines and books, which help too but its nice knowing from people who share the same ideas and goals. I usually stick to this board and wcbb, cause the people are great and the help is great, u people are awesome. I hope I didnt bore u all with this

vet or gury--nobody knows it all.but they are definitely know more then newbees.they get information same way everybody does--boards ,books, magazines, sometimes info is right sometimes not.and on some questions there is no simple answer.every person have different approach and every board has different approach.like methods and cycles people using here are little differ then whatever i learned from other boards.i was trying to follow whatever first advice i learned but then i swiched to different tactic. i ask the same question on different boards adn couple weeks later i ask similar (almost the same )question again.you would be surprized how differ that infor in two weeks even from the same person. but combining all those infos can get the better answer.

Like House1 said, I'm a vet of the boards even though i don't post much. I believe Dan Duchaine is the definition f what you call Guru!

On a serious note, I think that alot of it is knowledge. But, knowledge doesn't always come from books, it comes from experience too. Not being araid to try new things or even lose alittle trying something off the wall, even if it sounds good on paper.
