Anyones computer do this

Mine has been acting up again from last year. This is what happens to it.

Its on and im listening to music and on the net. As soon as I move the move its starts freezing on and off, on and off. If I move it while its doing that, it all of a sudden freezes but the music is still playing. I cannot control it through the keyboard also, which I need to turn the computer off or restart it.

My Norton Antivirus is expired but I downloaded a Antivirus thing from Download.com. It detected a virus and removed it. But the problem still exsists.

Could it be the music I got close to 3k songs. I also bought a Memory chip last year and installed it. Last yea that it happend we got another mouse and downloaded spybot and it worked well. Eventhough with this new mouse and spybot it restarted doing it again.

Have any of computers done this or doing this.

well the hard drive doesnt have alot of space. For the memory it still has plenty. Im just running the Norton Antivirus on start up. When im online i only use the Windows Media Player.

This happend last year too, it got annoying and all but I dont know what I did to fix it. Like everytime i go to a page, the laser mouse all of a sudden the red light goes off and on. If I move it while its doing that, I have to restart the thing.

Could it also be my computer being defective, its a Compaq Presario 5000.

it sounds like you don't have enough RAM to me. You might wanna step it up or consider getting a new computer

You need more memory. When you are running multiple applications at the same time (specially music through the net) you are putting alot of stress on your memory to keep processing everything smoothly. The only way to prevent this is to add more memory. How much do you have now? Given the amount of programs you just said you run, and the amount of songs on your hard drive, you should have at least 512 mb, but I would shoot for 1 gig.

I could be a couple different things. What operating system are you running? How much memory do you have installed? How much hard drive space do you have left? It could also be that it is virus or spyware related. Try this link

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...ml?tag=lst-0-2

If that doesn’t work go to download.com and do a search on ad-aware. Install the program and after it is installed make sure you check for updates before you scan your system. Also make sure that you virus protection software is up to date. Hope this helped.

Copy and paste this post. Then go to internet explorer. Click on tools. Click on internet options. Click on delete files. Click delete all offline content. Click delete cookies. You will have to sign in with your password again to any websites.

Next click startup menu programs. Click on accessories. Click on system tools. Click on disk cleanup. When cleanup is done, click on disk defragmenter. Analyze and then defragment. This will take some time. Go workout. Eat. Come back and check progress.

Defrag will store files into hard drive area together and leave free space pretty much together. This allows for your computer to cut down on time searching for files or applications and will help increase performance time.

Good advice, and you may want to try spybot search & destroy. Also available @ download.com This will also help get rid of any spyware or viruses.

as for total physical memory: 256mb
available memory: 65mb left

total virtual memory: 1.24gb
available virtual memory: 971.77mb

This computer came with 120mb of memory but I added another memory chip with the same amount of memory so which now has 256.

My computer has Windows Me.

The hard drive has 15.8gb
has 892mb- 1gb left, depending if im deleting things.

As for the virus, I downloaded a program at download.com and it removed one virus it had.

Last year or about a year and a half ago this happend also. I downloaded spybot from download.com and seemed to work well.

One problem Ive been noticing is the Norton Antivirus is messed up. It wont let me go into certain site and even lets me go to my hotmail without asking me all these questions. I went into the settings and it was all moved around. Im guessing, it could have bee my little 16yr old sister messing with it, or could have gotten it hacked, someone changing the settings to screw with it.

I just got my computer fixed not to long ago. A friend who knows about computers said that Compaq computers were so-so. Could this also be it.

2 problems.

You don't have enough memory 256 is pretty low for doing the things you do online. The main problem is Windows Me, thats the worst operating system microsoft ever made, you need to upgrade your memory and upgrade to Windows XP.

1. Do a disk clean up and defrag. That in itself may speed up your system.

1. Go to grisoft.com and dowload their AVG Free Edition - the link should be on the left side of the page. It is probably the best freeware virus protection you can find.

3. Download spybot (or ad aware). I use spybot and it is a very good anti-spyware program.

4. As others have suggested, try to upgrade your machine but do 1-3 first.

5. If nothing works, upgrade to Linux and all your windoze problems will go away!!

so upping it to 500 or more will do. About Windows Me, I was told the same thing. Hey Keiser, if my buddy has the Windows XP disk, is it too complicated to install it or do i need a person with computer knowledge to do it for me.
I just spoke to my girl, she has Windows Office 2000. Is this one any good.

Hey bro, i got another question. I wanted to add another hard drive or maybe getting one with more space to transfer all the music and files I have. Will it require more memory than the one Im going to add.

About 5,000 songs for the 20gig Ipod and 10,000 for the 40gig. I think there may be a 60gig ipod also. That would be 15,000 songs.

I just did everything you said, question though, what does contgiuous (sp) mean? It said that space were contigious files.
