Well, it is always advisable that you ask a physician these kinds of questions, but I can tell you what I know.

Higher in the abdomen, it is common to get aches and pains from the Round Ligaments that actually hold the Uterus. They stretch as the Uturus get larger. Thing is, I am not so sure I have ever heard of someone say that it was actually in the rib area.

Is she bleeding at all? One thing to watch is excessive bleeding. That can be a real problem. Spotting can be normal though, so don't freak out.

With the pain being so high I doubt it's serious but she should definitely talk to the doc.

It's too early in the pregnancy for the child's limbs to be putting pressure on the ribcage. This doesn't usually happen until the 7th-9th months.

My girl had similar pains and aches in her ribcage, and abdomen during our pregnancy. It was exactly as Shortz said. The ligaments are strecthing to accomadate the expansion of the cervix, and the abdominals are strecthing as well.

Regardless of what you hear from us, I would go see the OB/GYN for any and all concerns. You can never be too cautious during a pregnancy. Anytime, she or I felt something was out of the ordinary, we were at the doctors office.

Good luck, and you heard it here first. It's a girl !!!

Thanks everyone. It was just late at night and there was no one to call. We are being taken care of by the state, so the care won't be as easily accesable. She's fine this mornig and after she layed down for a while she felt better and went to sleep.

From the book, What to Expect When You're Expecting:

ABDOMINAL PAIN

"I'm very worried about the pains I've been getting on the sides of my pelvis."

What you are probably feeling is the stretching of muscles and ligaments supporting the uterus - something most pregnant women experience. The discomfort may be crampy or sharp and stabbing, and often is most noticeable when you are getting up from a bed or chair, or when you cough. It may be brief, or may last for several hours. As long as the pain is occasional and not persistent - and it is not accompanied by fever, chills, bleeding, increased vainal discharge, faintness, or other unusual symptoms - there's no cause for concern. Getting off your feet and resting in a comfortable position should bring some relief. You should of course, mention the pain to your practitioner at your next visit.

There's also a resource guide at the back of the book and it says to look in your local telephone directory to find phone numbers for city or state sponsored pregnancy hotlines.

Also, the National LIbrary of Medicine provides a list of 300 health hotlines. (301) 496-6308. 8600 Rockville Pike, Betheseda, MD 20894, Attn: Health Hotlines. You could probably find something online too...my book is old from 1991.
