Questions about living in New York city
I have a friend who wants to move there. She said she found some apartamnts by central park for $700 a month. I don't think she's being realistic about what it going to take to live there, go to school full time and work to pay for everything. Any knowledge on living there would be apprciated.

when i visited my sister every time we left the house we spent a minimum of $20.00....its soooo expensive. My sister worked fulltime at a good job and lived in manhatan and still had a tough time making ends meet. I hate people so I would never live there even if it was free.

My best friend is going to law school in Brooklyn. He's had to take the maximum of his loans in order to live there. $700 a month for her place is very very good, but she needs to know what she's getting first. It may be the size of a closet. She can do it but she's gonna have to take out a ton in loans even if she does get a job.

700$ per month in New York is a PIECE OF SHIT. Trust me on this. The minimum to live in or close to the city in a somewhat decent place will be atleast $1000-$1500 per month and that is cheap. The apartment we lived in which was about 20 minutes from New York was $1275 per month and it only got more expensive the closer you get to New York.
On top of that, everything is more expensive. I dont know if she plans to have a car but her insurance will rise by about $600-$1200 per year. I would really try to convince her that at $700 per month, her quility of life will be vert low.

By the way, our apartment that was $1275 also required a security deposit of $1500 before we could even move in. You dont get back your security deposit until after you move out.

I loved living in NY, grew up in a suburb but went to the city often and got my first job on Wall St. in the 80's. I would't trade the experience for anything but I'm so glad we moved away too. Now I just go back for vacations just long enough so that I don't get sick of it.

To me, the challenge of living in NYC is just never being alone. There are people everywhere you turn. Sometimes, I just wanna see the trees and open sky. Not gonna get that in NYC. It just stresses the hell outta me after a few days.

I have a friend who works at a salon in Manhattan and she charges $85 for a man's basic haircut. And she surely does not have a lack of business. $85 freakin dollars...fuck that! NYC is only cool to visit, hit the musuems, some pubs, and restaurants/pizza joints and then get the hell out of dodge. That place makes me crazy in no time flat. The roof of the Met is cool to hang out and have a few drinks and get a bird's eye view of the city. It appears somewhat clean that way, lol.

Im still living there now... I cant even move out of my parents house cause its soo expensive.. ive lived in Queens (a suburb of manhattan) all my life and when the does come for me to move out i think im outta here.. At least for a while.. Going to the west coast.
Living somewhere else does take some getting used to though.. Im still a night person and love the nightlife.. im not sure i can deal with bars and clubs closing at 1 and 2 am just yet.. Everything around u closing at 11-12 or eariler... I would think a studio is $700 bucks She wont need a car living in manhattan anyway.. theres taxis and the train everywhere you look. If she really wants to live in manhattan she should move to Harlem.. or right outside in brooklyn, queens or bayonne, nj... Ull save cash and manhattan is just a train ride away. Things that annoy me in NYC: I cant deal with manhattan during the day.. Its a nightmare to drive and more of a nightmare to find parking... People, cars and traffic everywhere.. If you find me in manhattan its always after 10pm The rush hours are pretty bad... Stay off the road at all costs around the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.. I schedule my work hours at 11:30 just for this reason and leave at 7 or 8 pm. People: People are rude and pretty cold hearted around here but im used to it. |

if your freind is good lookin tell hee to hit me up ill show her around
700 a mo most liekly will be a shitbox but then again i got a good friend who got a nice apt in the village and he dont pay more than a 900 for his (thanks to rent control) but if i was gonna move to the city or surrounding area id opt for the city itself the surrounding areas such as in jersey liek hoboken jersey city north bergen etc.. will be way more than if u actually found a reasonbly cheap palce in the city

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think it's kind of a lost cause. She just got engaged to a guy that she is not in love with. She is hoping that the love will develop. He's going to be moving there with here. She's not a citizen so I think that has something to do with it. It's all drama, and I hate drama so I'm just going to let it go.

700 a month for a apartment by central park?? lol, sorry to say but, thats a LIE..u will never, and mark my words, NEVER , find a apt by that park for less than 1300..and thats a shitty studio...ive been in manhattan 20 years and been in all types of apartments..and another thing..why wouldnt sumone wanna move to nyc?? it has everything and anything..and even if u wanna get away from everything u can go to central park , climb a rock, and feel like u in another world..if theres ever a place to make it and b successful, its new york..now, retirement, thats another thing..ill go to florida for that
