It's definitely good for stretching and flexibility but there are different ways to get that. I took up taekwando to help with my flexibility and speed. There's definitely better ways than yoga!

Most yoga is about helping relax the mind and body. You would probably like pilates to get more of what I think you're looking for.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice consisting of exercise forms as well as meditative elements that are targeted at physical and mental wellbeing.

There are many forms of yoga, some emphasiing the physical aspects and some the mental aspects. The most common form of yoga practised in the West is Hatha Yoga, and in particular the physical elements or "asanas" which are various postures aimed at improving physical wellbeing, flexibility and balance.

Other aspects like breathing exercises, meditation, etc. are also important in yoga but are typically less emphasized in the West.

While yoga has origins in the Hindu religion, the practices are not tied to any belief system and can be practised by anybody. While I have found from personal experience that having beliefs in Eastern religious philosophies helps with a holistic understanding of yoga, it is by no means essential.

Rocketw19, while stretching is one aspect of yoga (the asanas or yoga postures will improve flexibility if practised regularly), yoga is much much more than that.

Yoga aims at improving the health of mind and body. If you have stress in your life for example, you may find that performing yoga in the morning will improve your overall health.

As BBAddict indicates, for merely stretching, there are other ways as well, but yoga has unique things to offer that in my opinion cannot be replicated by any other medidative practice.
