I must be losing my mind!!!

I have been spending a great deal of time contemplating whether or not I want to re-enlist in the Army. I'm thinking about going the officer route this time. I was in from 95-99 as an enlisted soldier and it surely was not always a picnic, but I can't get it out of my mind lately. It's obvious that my chances of going to war are high. And although I don't support the reasons (or lack there of) that we are fighting it, I would still take pride in doing my part as an American to preserve the freedom we have. And as Gen. Patton said "The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other poor bastard die for his."

Anyhow, I really enjoy the social freedom I have right now, but even with all of that I'm still not happy. And before anyone asks....I have no idea what WILL make me happy. Sometimes I just wish I had a mental "off" button...

BLM...one of my best friends has been in that same situation....twice! And both times he re-enlisted...once he did he regreted it. He would do his time and get out, time would pass and he would want to go back....get back in.....and hate it. His family and I would always wonder why he kept doing this. We came to the conclusion that he was missing some kind of structure and self discipline in the civilian world. He needed someone to tell him what he needed to be doing and when. Once he got out for the third time we all talked to him and helped him find the discipline from inside. Basically his dad made a call to a friend, who offered him a nice paying job cleaning up the after math of hurricanes, tornados and floods.

Just try to figure out what it is you really want. There is an underlying problem that is the real issue!

Are you thinking of this as a long term carreer, remaining in until retirement?

No, if anything, it would just be another stepping stone towards something else.

Have you ever considered working for the NSA or something along those lines? They have a serious need for people in the counter-terrorism intelligence field. I don't mean as an operative but something along the lines of analyst or operations support staff. This would be directly impacting a domestic terror threat and you would actually be helping to protect US citizens from terrorist acts, as opposed to protecting multinational corporation business interests in Iraq. You could actually have an advantage over others with a military service record. Benefits are secure and money is decent. More importantly, you might feel that you're making a difference in the world. Just a thought...
