Well boys and gals I decided to give up smoking. This has been the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm so used to smoking after I eat, on breaks and at night that I feel like I have nothing to do now. It's kind of depressing. I've been wanting to quit for a while for fear of lung cancer. My mom just lost her battle with lung cancer a couple of months ago and she never smoked. I hated to see her go through that as well as my family. I just don't want to put anybody through that b/c of my stupidity.
I've also given up weed...This really doesn't bother me b/c I really don't care for the stuff..I guess I kind of out grew it, but continued to smoke it on the weekends for the hell of it. Anyone have any tips on getting past the cravings without getting the patch or medication? I bought a cigar that I chew on to try and trick myself and I eat some sugar free candy.

make sure you don't have a lot of down time to think about smoking...keep yourself busy with activities. Also the eviroments that brought smoking on the most for you I would avoid them...that could be the hard part if they are established parts of your life.

Just keep remembering how much of an oxymoron it is to smoke when you are suppose to be building a better stonger, HEALTHIER body.

I actually smoked for 4-5 years on and off. I got sick on day (step throat) my roomate was smoking at the time and when i was sick i just couldn't be around the smoke-so when i got better i guess from being so turned off when i was sick never had the craving to pick it up again. to this day i cant even stand being in bars w/ smoke-cant wait till they ban in completely in public places.

get rid of the cigar you are still getting nicotine that way, just make up your mind to quit and quit, dont let yourself down, but you have to do it for you and nobody else. Seriously just think about how much better you will feel your circulation will increase, your sense of taste and smell will be far increased, your sinuses will be clearer and your energy will increase, why the hell wouldnt you want to quit?

When you go to the places you used to buy cigs at, buy a pack of gum. Use the gum during the times where you would normally smoke. If you've gotten past the physical withdrawl of 3 days or so, you've done fantastic and the rest is pure willpower. Nicotine addiction is tough to beat but do it for yourself and for the ones who love you.
Sorry to hear about your mom. She'd be really proud of you for quitting. Good luck!

I like to tell people to think about when they first started smoking. No one in there right mind enjoyed it. So most will think back and relize that they did it for some really stupid reason. Then think about how you have let that decision control your life up to this point so much. Why should you let some bad decision that long ago, dictate your life so damn much. Think about how many people can't stick to exercise and eat better. Those of us that live it everday as our lives forget how rare we really are. How often are all the people in a room around you, fat, lazy, unmotivated, etc. If you can stick to the gym, why shouldn't you be able to stay confident and strong enough to quit smoking. I wish you the best of luck and strongly support your decision to quit smoking.

So far so good. The first couple of days were the hardest. I was so used to having one after meals and on my lunch breaks that I thought I was going to pop. Now it's like I forgot about it. I was around some people smoking last night I couldn't believe the smell. It made me stop and think at how foul I must have smelled. I think it will be all right from here on out.

I can only say I lost my step-father a year ago to lung cancer, lost one of my aunts last week to lung cancer, I have lost two other aunts to lung cancer (yes, I come from a large family) and my mother is on oxygen because of smoking. I have NEVER smoked and that is the reason why.

It's amazing how when we smoke we don't smell it, but once we've quit it stinks. Keep up the good work. Try to remember that the pleasure you get from smoking really isn't all that great, it's more of a mindfuck than anything else. Even the withdrawls probably weren't as bad as you expected.

I was telling Puma in another thread that you recently quit smoking. That made me start looking for this thread and I see you haven't given us an update. How's your progress coming??? Signed - Your Support Group |

At this point there is no turning back really. I would be too disappointed in myself if I just gave up and started up again. Plus my daughter was really excited about me quitting so I can't let her down. Thanks for all the support! WM
