Donations to help victims of Hurricane Katrina

These people need help. This is going to prove to be the worst disaster to ever hit the US. Please make any kind of donation you can to help. Places that you can donate money via the internet are www.redcross.org and www.salvationarmyusa.org . Im sure there are many others, feel free to post more links.

Thanks--I was just wondering about this. People who gave for the tsunami should feel guilty if they don't do at least as much for their own country.

we didn't have to suffer these gas prices as a result of the tsunami neither....people in the south, unless there wealthy as hell can't afford to be making big donations as long as the gas keeps getting crazy like this

i'm sorta worried about a terrorist attack now too, our country is vulnerable and not in a good situation, especially the southeast.....i'm sure terrorists are thinking kick em when there down

so many of there homes got destroyed down there though, i just dont know where all the money, labor and everything else is gonna come from......9/11 was a huge deal and that was only like 3 blocks of land, this is HUGE amount of land i couldn't even tell u where the destruction started and ended

What kind of donation per person would make a difference. Being from the south I of course feel a bit close to this. I will get my financial aid money on the 15th. I know that I have a baby on the way, but if like $20 is worthy enough, I am fortunate enough that it's nothing compared to the devistation.

If you don't have money to donate they are also in need of blood and will be for some time with all the illness and casualties that will be coming out of this.

Every little bit helps, if you do not have a lot of money just give your spare change. My family and my wifes family are from New Orleans and Slidell. My wife's family have lost everything, but they are all safe so far. We also have cousins in Mississippi, just bought brand new house and lost it all along the beach. I think the worse part are for the older people who need a lot of help. My wife has both her grandmothers down there and they are not doing well at all they have lost everything with no where to go. We are trying to get to them to bring to our home, but not quite sure how they can get here. We are trying to get them to texas so they can fly to us, but as of right now it is just not possible. They are thinking they will be able to go back to their house soon - but there is nothing to go back to and I heard today they say it will be at least 8 weeks before anyone can go back.

So like I said before any little bit helps, my kids emptied out their piggy banks and all their pennies to donate. If walk by a Red Cross or Salvation Army, drop a buck and some change in. Do not be ashamed if it is a dollar helping is helping.

Thanks

The unfortunate thing about that on this board, is alot of our blood wouldn't be useable.

Pros to using the blood from this board: lots and lots of red blood cells, nutrient rich, could promote more rapid healing

Cons: Might be a woman or a child that gets the blood

Too bad they can't differentiate the blood with labels "for use in healthy adult males only". But, since they don't, many of us won't be able to donate blood. I will be stopping by my local chapter of The Salvation Army to see what they need though.

They won't use it no matter what unless you can provide a script for the needles. I went to give blood last year and was completely honest about my past use of AS. I mean this is potentialy someones life were talking about. Well because I used a hypodermic needle without a script I am denied to give blood until like the year 2245 or something to that nature.

America (government and people) often help out monetarily where disasters occur abroad, they should get help themselves from other governments of this as well as citizens of other countries

They said on the news last night that at least 12 other countries have already started Hurricane Katrina Relief Funds - similar to the ones we had for the Tsunami Relief Effort...

We donated. The first few times my husband tried to access the Red Cross online we couldn't get in, apparently the site has been flooded by people trying to help. Yesterday Stromba got in and contributed. He also asked my daughter to contribute about 1/3 of her savings and she turned around and gave them about 75% of her money.

I'm gonna make a drive up to Salvation Army today with a lot of clothes and some other things, they'll find their way to the people in need. I also saw on the local news about a woman who has turned her land into a refuge for homeless with shelters for these people. She rented a bus, learned to drive it and is now on her way to get a buss load of people to bring back here to live and get a fresh start. The news said where this place is at and they are getting tons of local donations to help these people start up fresh. They will let us know what they need in the weeks to come.

I haven't donated any money and I won't. However, I did manage to pick up some stuff from Sam's when I went there yesterday.

I bought

1 case of diapers
1 gigantic thing of toilet paper
1 case of water
1 mixed case of canned vegetables
1 case of Ramen Noodles
A couple packages of T-Shirts and undergarments

I am taking it to one of the local radio stations today - they have a tractor trailer that is being loaded this afternoon and taken down there tonight.

I can understand that most of the time. I've been to New Orleans too many times and I know how a lot of the people are. Despite how hungry they are, they would rather spend the money on booze, drugs and other habits. I offer to buy them food and 99% of them turn it down or get pissed that I'll spend 10bucks on food but won't give them a dollar.
However, in this case it's going to organizations that will be distributing the aid in the form of necessities. I've donated through several organizations.

I'm all for donating to organizations - with goods that they can't squander. I know that they need money to run their operations I am just not the most trusting person in the world. I don't think the organizations would be doing tons of things with our money that are ill-used but you never know. There are horror stories out there and some people get greedy. As a safeguard I would personally rather know what I am contributing as opposed to just giving money and I can't see how it was used.
