Bugatti 1,001 horsepower street legal..

VW starts production of its new supercar, the Bugatti Veyron.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/AUTOS/funonw...ron/index.html

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Volkswagen's latest product probably won't be very good on gas and it has a rather high price tag. But that hasn't stopped a handful of people from putting down payments on the car before production started earlier this month.

Each Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will cost an estimated $1.24 million, according to media reports. For that, buyers will get an all-wheel-drive two-seat sports car with a lightweight carbon-fiber body and 16-cylinder engine capable of producing 1,001 horsepower.

VW purchased the Bugatti name in 1998, according to a report in the industry newspaper Automotive News Europe, and introduced a concept version of the Veyron at the Tokyo auto show the following year.

It has taken the intervening six years to perfect the car, according to the Automotive News report and others, and there had been doubts that the car would ever actually be sold. In a 2003 public debut at Laguna Seca Raceway, a prototype Veyron spun out of control.

In 2003, according to Automotive News, the car still suffered from two major problems: The enormous engine tended to overheat and the car, capable of top a speed of well in excess of 200 miles per hour, was unstable at high speeds. Several reports have placed the car's top speed at about 250 miles per hour.

The Bugatti name originated with a company that built high-performance cars from 1910 to 1956. Bugatti now operates in the same Alsace region, now part of France, in which the original Bugattis were made.

The company announced that it will build a four-door version of the car in the future, according to a report on Edmunds.com's Inside Line Website.

I would rather see it in one color. I wonder if they offer an 80 year financing plan?

Driving that on the street would just be insane. If you've ever driven 600hp, you know how much of a chore that is. Imagine driving 1001 hp. I couldn't imagine. Just suicide.

but all that HP comes from turbos, so if you arent driving WOT, it would be a pussycat around town. A friend of mine has a toyota supra which makes around 1200 hp ( 104 octane, 24 psi, 90 shot nos ) and that car is very easy to drive around town.

That's the case with a supra because supra's have huge turbo's with tons of psi that experience a ton of lag and it's only a four cylinder, so it's powerband is naturally in higher rpm. The bugatti is a 16 cylinder engine, turbo lag or not, the thing probably still has around 500lb ft of torque down around 2000-3500 rpm, so i'm sure it's still a bitch to drive.

If you can afford to buy this car in the first place, I doubt money is an issue. Just like whoever out there has an enzo. They don't mind paying the $60 per quart of oil or the $4k per brake pad that is required.

I have no fear of fainting. I do squats until I fall over and pass out. So what? It's not going to kill me. I wake up five minutes later and I'm OK. A lot of other athletes are afraid of this. So they don't pass out. They don't go on."

Money is always an issue. I know several multi millionaires and they're the cheapest motherfuckers I've ever met. I'm talking coupon cutting, asking for the senior special at restaurants, saving shopping bags to re-use kind of cheap. One is so bad he makes his secretary rip tissue in half and checks to make sure she uses both sides of the stationary before she throws it away. Of course then he goes and pays $16k for a damn rug and never blinks, so it's all kinda relative. But you can bet your ass they'd raise hell over any service charge.

I agree...if they're going to have those two ugly ass red dots on it, they should call it the "Black Widow" or maybe even "Widow Maker" cause I'm sure some no driving millionaire will might see if he can handle 1/2 the horses.

I doubt whether anyone would actually make good use of 1001 horses anyway. Why would you pay that much for a car unless it's for bragging rights? It's just for show. Just to say, "Hey, look I just wasted $1.5 million on a car that I'll never drive faster than 40mph, but damn, I look good sitting in it." Smells like dumbass to me.
