Southeastern Canda?...

How common is it for people to work in NY, Wisconson or whatever and live in Canada? How far do those people usually commute? What is the pay difference to cost of living?

I knew several Ontario nurses who crossed the border to work at hospitals in NY state...it's not uncommon at all...tho not as popular now that the US dollar isn't worth nearly as much as it used to be worth. Back when $1US = $1.40 canadian, there was a mass exodus of nurses. I knew a few Ontario doctors who worked a couple of days over in NY State as well to supplement their incomes, back when the Ontario government put a cap on what they could bill annually. That cap has since been lifted.

As far as commuting time, it would depend on where you live. There are some spots where the commute is literally a few minutes (IE near the international bridges over the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall, Johnstown, and Ivy Lea [Ontario]) In Western Canada and some parts of Eastern Canada, you don't even have to cross a bridge...you just drive on in as the highway transitions from Canada to US soil.

Cost of living is similar in my area (southeastern Ontario) to that in northern NY state. Pay difference would depend on job, of course...but they aren't all that far off. The difference would be the gain made on the exchange for Canadians crossing over to work in the US. It's not the winfall that it used to be, but it's still worth crossing for if the commute is short and the pay for the job is equal.

To add to hitman, there are many people who commute from Fort Erie and work in Niagara Falls and Buffalo. The vise versa happens with the strippers as well. lol But as he said it is very common and the commute into NF is less than 20 mins at most times.

lol, I'm not seriously considering it. At least not for a long time. It looks very nice, but it was more a question of curiosity. We will probably be going to Colorado in a year and a half. Also once my son starts school I want to try and stay in the same place until he graduates high school.
