I think he actually undid all his progress in 2005. Mike and the Mad Dog (if you listen to them) KILLED the Giants today...they said they didn't even deserve to have been in the playoffs...ouch...at least the Yankees' pitchers will be up and throwing soon

I think he'll be decent, Roethlisberger wasn't great in the playoffs last year, but a) played a whooooole lot more in his rooke year, b) still got 3 playoff games before this year, and c) was better to begin with. The other problem is, we'll always compare Eli to his brother, but also the good young ones, like Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer (where is Philip Rivers anyway???) I wouldn't exactly say he's overrated, no one seems to be running around saying he IS amazing, they just talk about him a lot cause he's a great story -- a Manning, a great case of "lets see how he'll do"

if you want to know who I think is overrated, for example, Pete Rose -- a career .302 hitter

How can you even bring Pete Rose into this thread? Besides, he didn't get all the attention because of his hitting, he got it because of the way he played. Always giving it his all in every play. That is why they called him "Charlie Hustle". When going after a ball or running bases he ran like there was no tomorrow. If you want to talk about a baseball player that is over rated look at your 3rd baseman, A-Rod, what a joke. Better yet, what about the whole Yankee organization...spending all that money on players to get another title and yet they still lose.

And yet Pete Rose is the career hit leader in major league baseball...you're right, no big deal. He obviously sucked.

Eli Manning wouldn't even be starting as quarterback if not for all the hype and hoopla surrounding him coming out of college. It seems that professional sports in general is becoming all about the hype instead of playing the sport. Guys like TO and Kobe are turning professional sports into a joke. And I agree, players like Gay-Rod and playboy Jeeter are overrated. Sure, they're good, but they're not the cosmic forces that Yankee fans like to think they are. And yes, I'm a Red Sox fan and yes, I agree that Manny is overrated too. Overpaid underachiever. That describes most of major league baseball.

:bravonew:
Eli lost any and all respect when he didn't do his time in Diego...where he should have started his career. Instead his bitch ass father gets involved and works out a deal to get him to NY. What a f'n puss......Ohhh daddy, I don't want to play for the Chargers, they stink and will make me look bad. Guess what Eli...you stink and you make yourself look bad!

Ha Ha...that's right. If he can't get into the league on the strength of his own talent and potential, than what the hell business does his father have throwing his weight around to get him where he wants to be. He does stink.

maybe I should have explained "overrated" Pete Rose did play with unmatched hustle -- fair enough. He is the all-time hits leader. The problem I have with him -- or more appropriately -- his fans, is that they want to consider him one of baseball's all-time greats, which he isn't. He has a .375 career OBA, and .409 career slugging average. Those aren't "all time great" numbers; the numbers don't match the hype and hoopla surrounding his career, which is why I call him overrated. Statistically, he really compared to Paul Molitor, except didn't steal as many bases.

Alex Rodriguez, on the other hand, I wouldn't call overrated. He just won the AL MVP award, his second, and led the AL in home runs, slugging, OPS (on base plus slugging). Additionally, he was second in on-base average, batting average, and total bases. He has 429 career home runs, and is 30 years old. He is considered one of the best players of our era. No, I would't call ARod overrated.

Now, to Eli. I would say he gets a lot of media hype, not necessarily about HIS talent, but because he comes from a storied, football family, and his brother is the "current standard" at the quarterback position. Not to mention, he plays in the biggest media market in the US. If the general consensus were "oh, Eli's a superstar, Eli's great," I'd say yes, he's overrated. The impression I have, however, is that everyone is ready and waiting for a moment to throw him under the bus. As a measure of public perception, he was pretty low on everyone's fantasy draft board (did you draft him high for your team?). I can't consider him "overrated" until people really start running around saying he's amazing, and then plays the way he did against Carolina...which I think was awful.

I would call Manny a few things before overrated. Manny had a bit of an off-year by his standards, and still finished with 45 HR and 144 RBI, OBP of .388 and a .594 slugging avg. He still had a great season, and is still probably one of the top right-handed hitters in baseball. I'd say he gets a little lazy at times defensively, I'd say he loses focus in the field, I'd say he says the wrong things at times (like always asking for trades), but if anything, I'd be closer to calling him UNDERrated, for the simple reason that it seemingly hasn't dawned on people (maybe because Philly is a national league city) that he's one of the game's great hitters. Overpaid...very highly paid, yes, 2nd highest in the AL, but at the same time, you couldn't exactly name a whole bunch of players you'd rather have on your team. Once you get past Pujols and ARod and Ortiz...he's right about there

See, I was using "sarcasm". Let me explain: Sarcasm is "a form of wit that is marked by the use of insults or scorn and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule." I apologize if that went over your head. Cause...you know...everything we say on here is 100% serious. I'll try to dumb it down for you next time.

When you talk about overrated vs underrated you also have to consider what a player's team needs from him. When the season was on the line, Manny sucked as bad as anyone else in Boston. In today's game 45 hrs is good, not great. Players reach the 40 hr/yr plateau regularly. Ortiz was the only player who actually played up to his potential. But Boston has always been full of people in the front office who are more interested in team politics than winning games. Now, I know you're all in love with Gay-Rod, but to call him the greatest player of our era is ridiculous. I don't care who said it first.

Overrated and overpaid. IMO. I would take Pujols or Jeter or Guerrero or Ichiro and even Furcal over A-Rod anyday.

Typical Yankee fan for ya. They have been so blinded by the organization that no one else will ever be right. Steinbrinner is the Jim Jones of the MLB!
