I thought the same before I workout once at a local health club here (see my thread where I got into a aurgument with a worker from my gym). The gym I go to is one of those hardcore gyms, only gym I had been to in the last 4 years. When I did my workout at the health club, I got one of the worst workouts I ever had. It sucked, most of the people weren't doing anything, they acted like it was a social place to be at. I remember doing my entire chest workout while some idiot did a few curls (the whole hour I was there) watching the flat screen tv with his smoothie.

The weight is the same, the atmosphere isn't.

sometimes the weights aren't even the same, some dumbbells are little heavier or lighter in some gyms...but yeah, I worked out in Gold's in Venice and it was worlds apart from any other place I've worked out...ideally I'd work out there all the time, which is hard cause I live 3,000 miles away

ya i didnt even think about the motivational factor that makes alot more sense i try to avoid all the crowds at the gym because of a social scene...very good point...im usually in my own world when i go to the gym so when it is a social scene im usually not paying attention...unless those assholes are having there jerkoff party in the midst of using weights that i want to use...then i want to shank someone.

i had the opportunity to work out there once too...
one of my first experiences working out was at a small local gym. i was doing dumbell presses and a man began talking to me. after a short while he asked me why i was using only 60 lb dumbells. i told him that's all i'm used to doing (i had just graduated from highschool at this time). he was nothing but encouraging and said it's all in my mind, with my size i should be able to do more and that i should just 'know' that in my mind.
sure enough, my next set i went up 40 pounds, and with every set of every exercise i look forward to being able to rack up another plate, another 10-20 pounds, and feeling as though i've accomplished something for it.
i went off to college and when i came back one spring break the gym was closed. i then moved and i have no golds gym, no real hardcore place to workout at.
i'm at a 24 hour fitness now, and i tell you what, i'm pretty sure it's the indian from the village people who chooses the playlist, all the while wearing ass-less chaps. it's a meatmarket, half the people there aren't interested in anything but scoping out booty. now to be honest, i'll check booty out when leaving, but by then i'm tired, sweaty and disheveled, and definitely not looking like the asshats who are usually there and checking themselves out in the mirror between "sets." I add quotations there because no one there is really pushing themselves towards failure, and hence towards real growth.
asking for a spot? I wouldn't ask 1/4 of the people there for one, they couldn't peel the weights off the bar in time for it to fall off to the other side to save me.
but there are some really good people there, including the 2004 emerald cup champion. those of us who are serious, we know eachother by name. we gravitate to eachother. and we joke that the gym must own stock in mp3 players because the music is so bad and unmotivating, the owners must know this and must be trying to push sales of our own music players for it. some of the personal trainers are true tools, and actually try to sell their services on the floor when it's obvious they don't practice what they preach, e.g. they're fatasses, (yeah i paid attention to that grammatical thread ) I actually had a personal trainer try to blatantly lie about my bf content (i saw him trace his fingers down the chart and then move over, and purposely re-traced it myself, he had no explanation as to why he was reading from the wrong line). i've had to make what i can, from what i have, and i can't help but think that if i had the privilege of working out in a no bullshit gym with people around me who inspire me, the inspiration would be easier. that doesn't mean i don't seek it out, i still strive to push myself... it would just be easier if i didn't have so many ass-clowns around me...

my gym is decent...I'm fortunate enough to have my membership fees "taken care of," so you won't really find me complaining. It's a little hard to get motivated when you lift more than just about everyone else there (except for this one monster who I never see anymore)...I just try to lift with as much focus as I can, pretend I'm somewhere else, I guess...

There isn't really anyone big at my gym at all. It's mainly college kids on their breaks and old people with heart conditions. Every now and then I see a person I know sign up but they normally only last a month or so and they stop coming. It is convient for me though being a block away from my place but I just feel I need to get back to a real gym to get back to what got me started. It is nice having pretty much most of the weight area to myself but It doesn't help with motivation, and the db's only go to 120.

i've looked, the only thing close to a dungeon type gym is a christian gym, with huge pictures of jesus doing pushups with a cross on his back, etc. there are a few bally's, and of course curves... oh well.
