Ouch! $15 for a copy of a car key

So the local places can't make a copy of my car key that works. It seems that the blanks they have aren't thick enough. The key works the door and the ignition. It dosn't have a chip and it's not electronic. Just a piece of metal. So I went to the chevy dealership and they would have to order it. So the key would be $15 plus tax and I'm sure they will charge a few dollars for labor. Luckly I'm leaving for Austin in the morning. I hope that a Home Depot or the likes will have a blank that works.

Anything from a dealer is way too expensive. I'm sure something in Austin will have a blank, as long as the car isn't too old. Have fun in Austin--it's a pretty cool for a small city.

Is it for your truck that you posted a picture of a long time ago? If so, any major retailer like Walmart, Sears or Home Depot will have it for just a few bucks...

That's too much for a basic key...These days with all the new technology in those vehicles, fucking keys are costing more than $125 a set

My car key cost $150. It's got a chip in the key, or something like that, way too much money though.

i have a honda too, but mine has an embedded chip (other places can make copies but it won't start the car), AND the alarm keypad controls on it... yeah, $75 bucks a pop is a bit much, and i sure as hell won't be losing it anytime soon!

A chip on the key or in it? Not a chance bro, unless you're buying one from the Cayman Islands...The new Honda's have the remote key, yes that's true...But no "Chip" has ever been on the key itself....Not to be an ass here or be argumentative, but just trying to clarify things.

I'm about done with Honda's. I've lease an Accord for 9 yrs in a row. This one is my third one and the lease is up in a couple of months. Good cars but I'm just bored with them. I want a convertible for the winter months here and I need something big enough for 4 people. My daughter wanted me to get a Mustang but that's just asking for a ticket around here, I may go with...don't laugh...the PT Cruiser. OK, you can laugh, I do! My daughter saw one with some custom stuff including a funky paint job, she can help me design it since she'll wind up with it when she goes to college in 4 more yrs.

nah, you're not coming accross as argumentive. i could very easily be wrong, but if there's no chip, how come if i get a copy made at a hardware store and put it in the ignition, the engine won't turn over? anyone know?

well, i couldn't wait for others to answer so i did some research. Honda's as early as 98 have 'immobilizer chips' in the keys.

"Immobilizers have been slower to show up on North American vehicles, but enthusiasm is growing as automakers see results in Europe. Ford, a major European automaker as well as one of the U.S. Big Three, introduced its SecuriLock immobilizer on the 1996 Mustang GT and reported that theft rates fell 77 percent from those for the 1995 model. SecuriLock is now standard on every Ford and Lincoln Mercury model except the Ranger small pickup and the Escort compact, which is being replaced by the Focus. It was added to the Mercury Villager when the minivan was redesigned for the 1999 model year. Cadillac included Delco's PassKey III on most 1997 models, and GM now includes it on Buick Park Avenue, Cadillac Seville, and Pontiac Transport, Oldsmobile Silhouette, and Chevrolet Venture minivans. PassKey III is also included, as the Honda Immobilizer, on the Honda Accord, Honda Odyssey minivan and the Acura CL."
I researched this further to see if it has anything to do with the alarm disable, but i can easily disable my car with a working remote, and still not start the key with the hardware store-made key...

I just bought my first Honda, an Element. Traded my Suburban and only lost $1k on the gas guzzler. Looking at it as a transition vehicle but I am pretty happy with it so far.

I'd had a big dodge truck before my honda, and the gas savings per month actually made up 1/3rd of the car payment.
