wireless internet problem
So I'm trying to get my wireless hooked up at home. Everything seems to work fine. It says it connected, has excellent strength... But I can't access the web.

try this:
Click Start-Run-Type in "command"- click enter-type in "ipconfig /release"-click enter-type in "ipconfig /renew"-click enter If it still doesn't work I'd try to restart it and if that doesn't work then I'm not sure, that type of thing is easier to troubleshoot in person.

Are you positive the router is configured w/a static ip and proper dns ip or set to dhcp?

I honestly don't know. I used the set up CD, it said it was configured. My computer detected the signal, I connected, it said excellent strength.

Go to Start >>> My Network Places >>> right click >>> properties >>> local area connection >>> right click >properties >>> scroll down toTCP/IP >>> double click...make sure 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'obtain DNS server address automatically' is also selcted. Then enter 192.168.1.1 into your browser. User: admin P/W: admin. This will get you into your Linksys. Verify that on your 'Setup' page you see DHCP in the drop down menu. Then select the 'Status' tab and click Release DHCP...then Renew DHCP...then refresh. Then disconnect the ethernet cable, reboot your laptop and try to establish a connection again. See if that voodoo works.

So it's kind of wierd. I had used someone else's connection to get something done while my internet was down (the movie download thing). Now I turned mine on, connected and tested it before messing with anything. It seems to work fine now. I am trying to figure out how to put a password on my connection though.

Are trying to turn on encryption for your router? If so follow blm's steps on connecting to your router and then select the wireless security settings. There you should be able to select a password to connect to your router. I have a Linksys at home. I can do some screen shots for you if you need to see the exact screen info.

I set the encryption password. But when I do that I can no longer connect to my router. Should I go through BLM's steps first?

You also have to set that password on your wireless card. Once you select the SSID on your cards utility then you should be able to enter that password. Hope that helps! |

This shit is so frustrating. I can't find an option to set my wireless card password. I tried setting the password on the Linksys and then setting the same password for my encryption, but it stopped working again once I tried to set the encryption.

As long as you are using the same password you should be fine. First enter it on your router in the wireless settings and then on the laptop's wireless utility. What kind of wireless adapter are you using?

Ok, back to this
Also, I got this router second hand from my mom. She dosn't remember setting any passwords before, and the SSID was still set at Linksys...

Reset everything back to default and start from scratch then if things still don't work it will be easier to help you...instead of assuming that everyting is factory default. You can do that by holding in the reset button for 30-45 secs.

After that get back into the router go to > wireless > wireless security > choose WEP > choose 64 or 128 encryption (128 is better) > then type in a passphrase of your choice > hit 'Generate' this will create (4) 26 digit WEP keys. Right below the 'Security Mode' option you can choose which transmit key you want to use. Then when you are prompted for your WEP key simply type it in. You should only have to do it once.
Also, now that you have your own Linksys you can raise the power if you have problems getting a signal anywhere around the house. As long as it's V.4 or less.

Well I don't know where it's messing up. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing or it's this laptop that has a weird setting. Thanks for your help, but I'm am just going to leave it unsecured until I can get someone here to secure it for me.
