I'm curious at to what emergency vehicles will have to deal with soon. I was driving down the road the other day talking with my wife (something important, not quite relevant though) and I didn't notice an ambulance until it was almost right behind me. I finally heard the siren and looked in my mirrors and there he was. I know I had to have slowed him up.

when going through the Emergency Vehicles Operating Course (ambulance driving) they show a video of a car with the a/c on full blast and an ambulance coming up behind it. with the road noise and a/c going you can't hear it until it's almost up on you. yeah it slows the ambulance down, and they just ask that people be aware for the lights cause the siren only goes so far

Well I'm wondering if they will install some sort of light on the dash board that turns on when an emergency vehicle is with in a certain distance.

:hmmm: A dashboard light wouldn't be the answer. The lights on a dashboard are likely to stop working at some time or another and I doubt the automotive industry wants that responsibility or liability.

as a driver you're supposed to periodically check your surroundings...the lights flashing in the rearview mirror always grab my attention

Yeah, I'm constantly glancing at my mirrors. I almost never hear them before I see them anyway.

Bro...I'm the far from being an excellent driver.... with the wife yapping all the time and Chase's "Wiggles cd's" my only escape is to constantly check my mirrors and surroundings!

And when the wife's pissed the best way to not have to look at her is to keep checking your mirrors. Yup, true story.

You should be checking your mirrors every 6-8 seconds, that is what my driving instructor taught me.... anyhow that's enough of me being a pain in the ass. I know exactly what you mean, I am always checking my mirrors and seeing them b4 I hear them but when you are trying to focus on something important while driving it's not always that easy... guess we should be pulling over to do the important things. (I think my driving instructor taught me that too....bastard.)

Try to make sure that your side and rearview mirrors are pointed in such a way as to be able to see not only things very close to the automobile but to also see upcoming vehicles from a distance. That way, the flashing lights WILL catch your attention before the sound of the alarm does.
