That wasn't cool. I just saw the movie. They portrayed Xerxes as a total freak. I reconfirmed...I'm definitely more like Leonidas.

The movie was good. I agree, it was quite repetetive and not near as brutal as I thought it would be (and should have been)...considering the reality of the historical battle. Definitely worth watching though.

I watched a screening of The Last Mimzy over the weekend - they do NOT use the same film as they would a "real" showing - so he got jipped.....

Now that I think about it, the movie as a movie was great. But the movie as a portrayal of the real Leonidas and men of Sparta sucked. The characters in the movie were pussies compared to the real Spartans that defended that pass. The movie actually dumbed down the story and took quite a bit away from it. According to Herodatus, the Oracle told them that either Sparta would be sacked and destroyed or Leonidas must sacrifice his life to defend her. So, Leonidas didn't disobey the Oracle, he made the choice to sacrifice his life to preserve Sparta.

From what I've read, the Greek forces numbered about 5,000. On the first day the Persians sent a first wave of 10,000 that was decimated while only 2 or 3 Spartans were killed. The second wave of another 10,000 (Immortals) attacked and they didn't fare any better than the first wave. The next day Xerxes attacked with 50,000 and they too were defeated. Can you imagine 5,000 men defending a pass against 70,000 attacking soldiers? Insane. When the Greeks realized that Xerxes knew about the goat path leading in behind them, that's when they chose to withdraw with the exception of Leonidas and his 300 Spartans and 700 Thesbians.

But like I said, as a movie, it was pretty good.

The soundtrack kicked ass.

I didn't realize that Gerard Butler (King Leonides) was the same guy who played the phantom in the most recent Phantom of the Opera movie.

I'm sure when they release it on dvd, it'll be unrated or directors cut version that'll show a bunch that they couldn't in the theaters.

i agree with B.

i could have waited to see it on DVD. i was not familiar with the 300 the story nor did I read the book prior to this movie. so when i saw it i couldnt help but think that its not that interesting of a story. i think the story itself was lost. they needed to descide if they were going to follow the novel or take the history route. it ended up a mix of both i believe with greek mythology, oracles, soilders, giants, and other creatures it got weird. at times i felt like a was watching a rip off of LOTRs, or Gladitior, or Troy lacked originality. i had a problem with the whole part with his women (the wife-i wont go into details for those who havent seen it) was fuking stupid could of left it out. during the fighting it seemed like the 30 instead of 300. the dialog was corney too.

positive - lots of killing, some cool battle scenes, some of the persain fighters were cool.

I think they should have added more scenes that showed a wider view of the battle. There were too many close up fighting scenes to really understand what they were up against. Watching one guy kill like a dozen guys in battle isn't as surreal as watching 300 guys slaughter 70,000 attackers or watching the Spartans fighting in a circle, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Persians and fighting their way to Leonidas's body, then fighting their way back to the wall with it. Imagine seeing that on the big screen. I think it would be awesome if they made like a 3 1/2 hour movie and made it follow history to the letter.

And can you believe Iran is acting like this movie was a direct attempt by the US to embarass and belittle them? What a bunch of pussies. It's based on history for fuck sake!!! But, you know what, it's too stupid to even get worked up over.

Agreed. You make a good point that i didnt think about. The movie just did not get across the scale of the battle. It looked more like 30-40 guys taking on a hundred or so.

as far as the iran thing. i dont know anything about it. stopped watching or reading the news months ago. the kind of news we get today is poison. i may read some local news about the jersey NYC area but thats it.

Man that movie fucking sucked!!! I cant believe so many people made such a big deal about it. The effects were cool and all but come on already with the damn computer generated blood droplets, and slow motion. How many fucking motivational speeches can you have in one movie. Then the at the end when he is walking throught the wheat fields um.........gladiator. And Xerses was a giant homo literally, a 7 foot tall fruitcake. Man I wish I could get that 2 hours of my life back. It was like he took all the best parts of braveheart, troy, and gladiator and turned them into one giant pile of shit. The story itself is very interesting but he fucked it all up with goats playing flutes and all the other dumb shit that was thrown in there for no reason. Okay I'm done, why didnt one of you guys warn me?

Deacon is on a distinguished road
it is heavily hyped because of the special effects - but I still liked it better than some movies I have seen recently
