Ok, here you go...Let's here your thoughts on the CEO winning the lottery yesterday.
Home Depot gave Robert Nardelli a 210 million compensation package as they kicked him out the door. |

Goddamn, that guy ought to get fired more often. Negotiate your contract beforehand, fuck everything up, then walk away with 210 million. I've heard of performance based compensation, but this seems like "no performance" based compensation. :hmmm:

I agree.
From what I've read and been able to gather, he did what he was hired to do. He came in and cleaned up their balance sheet. He did this by removing unnecessary layers of executive management & store personnel, reduced inventory, expanded globally & wringing every penny out of vendors that he could. However, it is some of those same things that a lot of folks frowned upon. Initially, he came in sort of humble, but soon started acting like he knew more than all of his direct reports. Many of the executives got pissed and quit, and they took a lot of retail experience with them that he didn't have. Hell, he even ran his own annual report last May. While he was there, he limited the length of time that analysts had to ask a question & ignored them if they exceeded the time limit. Talk about a dick. Many vendors took their products off of the shelfs because of the negotiating they had to face & it just wasn't worth it seeing their profit margins reduced to next to nothing. His biggest strike was probably losing customers to Lowes. When he started 5 years ago or so, both Lowes and Depot were rated the same in customer satisfaction as far as surveys go in terms of help, store cleanliness, lighting, inventory, & customer appeal. This year Lowes is markedly ahead. This occurred because of the $1 billion of inventory reduction & staff reduction. Customers couldn't find what they needed or employees to help them find what they needed. Lowe's is now perceived to have the better customer service. This is somewhat striking to me because I worked for Lowes for 8 years, & I always thought Depot's store employees were more knowledgable & helpful. Most people think Nardelli was out to prove Jack Welch wrong. They believe that Nardelli was pissed that he wasn't selected as CEO at GE, so he was simply driven at Home Depot to make the numbers better. I've read where several analysts said that he should've relaxed a little more, not been so concerned about the bottom line, & listened to what his employees had to say. It'll be interesting to see what happens from here because the CEO that they hired in Nardelli's place is also a former GE executive. This guy also has no retail experience or retail management experience. He is a lawyer. He is much more approachable, but some wonder if he has been brought in either to dissuade or facilitate a leveraged buyout. I believe it would be hard to pull off with Depot being a $100 billion company. Maybe they just want to plant the seed that it could happen to drive the stock price up because Depot is in fact underpriced. Personally, I still own stock in Lowe's & the two prices tend to react the same way. I know that sounds kind of dumb because Lowe's is up like 120% over the past 5 years while Depot is negative, but most days the prices follow each other. Also, Lowe's is still expanding while Depot has saturated the US market. Anyway, I like seeing both prices increase and hope they do so considerably over the next few years. |
