Tonsillectomy in the late 20's...?

I have a tonsillectomy scheduled for May 18th. I'm in my late 20's and I was wondering if anyone else has experience getting it done around that age.

Don't have experience with it at that age. I had mine removed when I was 10. Recovery just takes a bit longer with any surgery as you get older. A lot of soft foods, and your throat hurts for about a week after. But on the bright side, due to the fact that you work out, and are in good health I assume otherwise, it should be no big deal. Recovery time for active people is much less.

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few months ago, and it wasn't so bad.

i had mine done at 25. I was pretty mad because none of the doctors had ever suggested it before but thats not the point. I was VERY strict with the food I ate and had no problems healing up. A girl I know had to go to the emergency room 3 times for complications including the scabs coming off.

Its going to be time to take a break from your good diet for a while. Chicken, rice, etc, are no good for fresh tonsil scabs. I ate a lot of vanilla pudding and white bread soaked in soup. and get some sea salt to rinse your mouth with.

Oh, and they gave me 50 vicodin at a time. I'm kind of a sissy so I actually got part way through the second bottle.

I was wondering if being healthier than the average person would make things better for this procedure, thanks for the info. I know when I got my wisdom teeth out a few years back, the oral surgeon and everyone was impressed how well I was doing a couple days later. I was eating anything I wanted the next day... Also people have suggested I ask the doc about removing my adenoids. I don't know if this is standard now, but supposedly it can help reduce snoring. I only snore every now and then (like a couple times a month I think), but I'm sure my wife would appreciate that.

Speaking of the Adnoids, you might want to reconsider. Since mine were removed with my tonsils, I have painful sneezes. It sounds weird but when I sneeze everything goes through my nose and its pretty painful. I actually have an appointment with my doctor ti find out what causes it becaue I kind of think it is the adnoids.

I asked the nurse today about the adenoids and she said if they are swollen when the doctor goes in they need to be removed anyways... That in most patients they are both swollen.

i thought this was only something that kids get done? thought they had done away with taking out the tonsils because they had found they are indeed helpful to us.

It's pros versus cons. I know when our parents were kids they use to take the kids tonsils out by the family. Once one kid was having problems, they just took them out of all the kids. At a young age it helps with developing your immune system, but if you are getting strep a lot then that is more dangerous. As an adult your immune system is developed so they are not really needed. In my case I started getting lots of sore throats and I get tonsil stones. I guess once this starts happening it can be never ending so they take out the tonsils so I don't keep getting bacterial infections.

Cool

ive never had mine removed ,but my girlfriend had hers removed when she was 21. said she'd rather give birth again, didnt hurt as bad.
On the other hand if your getting them removed because of chronic sore throats or some kind of other annoying affliction, itll be worth it.

Yea, that's how I looked at it. The ENT doc said I would have a REALLY sore throat for 7-10 days, but I will have pain killers. I figured once I make it through all that pain, I won't have a dull to very uncomfortable pain, about every 2 weeks.

A script for vicodin and an excuse for eating ice cream for every meal for a week straight...sounds like a good deal to me...LOL! Seriously though, it's worth it to never have to deal with tonsillitis again.

Being health and active really makes a difference. I know when I had "The Girls" done...I had them done on a Friday morning. Friday evening was the worst because I let the pain meds wear off...But, by Sunday, I was at the mall shopping, and back to work the next day. And when I had my wisdom teeth out; same thing- really only had about 2 days of down time.

Well I just got back from my surgery. My throat is feeling good right now, but they said tomorrow might be the worse day. I'm a little nausea now that I got home, I think from the car ride. The anesthesia is still making me a bit dizy, so I will go lay down and try to get it more out of my system.

Get this shit, I was having a little trouble with nausea when I wasn't laying down. So I called the hospital to ask what I should take (pepto, benadryl, tums...) and there weren't any doctors there, so they have to page the on call. Well they got all my info before paging the doc so he would know the case, the doc calls me back within about 15 mins. I was trying to ask him and he couldn't here me because he was in a loud restaurant. He kept telling me to speak up. It took a while for him to hear me, but I wanted to say "Go to somewhere more quite, I just had a tonsillectomy you dumb ass".

By the way, I got Roxicet. It's a mg liquid solution similar to percacet.

A lot of people loooove percacet, but that shit makes me feel like I'm being attacked by fire ants.

I like it, but I have been very tired. I'm sure part of it is the recovery, but I think it's mostly from being stoned. I really like the sleep I get when I'm all stoned

Glad to hear that they gave you the good stuff, and that you're feeling very little pain.

Well it's been about 10 hours since I have had pain meds (every 6 hours) and it's not too bad. I can eat pretty well. I am trying to see if I can go a while without it so I don't have to miss a whole day of work tomorrow and maybe take two half days instead.

I had my tonsils out when I was 5 and I almost died in the OR. They didn't know I was allergic to the anasthetic and my heart stopped. I had a lot of complications afterwards as well. I was in and out of the hospital for a few months (from what I'm told).
