Tipping

Are you guys/girls good tippers? Unless service was really poor at minimum I'll tip 20%. Usually if I and the wife go out to eat and our bill is $100 I'll tip about $30. Your waiter/waitress can definitely make or break your experience at the restaurant. I know some that only tip 10% or under. Maybe I'm just being generous.

Now to get to my question. I just had my second tattoo session. I have one more left. Will be around $1500. How much should I tip? I can't remember how much I tipped before for a tattoo. 20% would be $300. Damn!

I have one tattoo. It cost me $500. It took 4 hours and I didn't tip anything. I don't see why a tip is expected. A good tattoo parlor makes sick profit off giving tattoos. Their equipment is paid for. And they can pay for the ink for multiple tattoos in an hour session. It's all labor for the most part. If I paid $1500 I might be incliced to give $50- $100....maybe.

As for restaurants I tip very well. That's because for the first 5 years of my working career I was a server/bartender, so I empathize with the work that needs to be done. I can see the details in their service probably more easily than others.

Restaurant tipping of 20% is a must, but not a given. I usually tip off of how well my cup stays full. That is one of my pet peeves (eating a meal without a drink).

One question, my wife gets pissed that I don't tip the pizza delivery guy more than $1-$2. Do you guys think that the 20% rule applies to food delivery service?

Tattoos - When I sat for my 2 hour session the artist was really cool and we actually talked about this. He said he did't care either way, but if the experience was good and you were happy then why not? I tend to agree, since getting a tattoo is such a big decision (for most) that the artist, similar to the waiter/waitress, can make it or break it. I do not agree, however, that the 20% rule applies to this situation. I think $100 tip for tattoos over $1000 is plenty.

I don't tip delivery guys much. I know you are suppose to be tipping according to the convienece it is for you, but I don't really feel like they are doing me a service. They are getting paid to drive. They are just handing me the food I ordered much like at a McDonalds. I know as a bartender we took care of all the to go orders. Some people would tip and some wouldn't. I didn't mind if they didn't, I don't feel like I really did anything special for them. I may only tip on my carry out orders a dollar or two.

I always start with 20%...To me; 15% is not enough...By the time they tip out the bar, host, etc...It's nothing...We've all waited tables(I did)...If you're doing your job and being attentive with me(or us)...I'll leave 30%...I mean is $4-$6 really going to hurt anyone?

Now if you just suck...You're going to get 15%...

My rule is: 25 percent for exceptional service, 20 for very good service, 15 for average service, 10 for below average (yet not terrible) service. For terrible service...go fuck yourself, zero.

Delivery guy gets around three bucks on a small order, four on a larger order. I used to deliver pizzas and believe me...if you are stingy, your food will get delivered last when there are multiple orders going out in the future. I remember some non-tipping assholes that would order often, and I'd make damn sure their pizza didn't get there hot if it was at all possible to stall.

Usually up to 30% and never below 20% unless they were just completely absent (although I rarely tip on alcohol with a meal I will tip very well at the bar - just doesn't make sense to tip x% on an expensive bottle of wine etc)...

Carry out - usually 10%....

Delivery/pizza guys around here have to pay for their own gas/transportation/tires/oil changes etc and only get like $2 per delivery so I usually tip about 20% (I know a few people and what hitmansb said is very very very true)......

I'm also funny about whole numbers so if my bill at a small place/lunch is $6 I will just leave a $10 etc....

15% use to be the standard for good service about 15 years ago. As with everything else the inflation has brought cost up. The hourly wage for servers hasn't really changed so it's more important to get better tips to live off of.

As for delivery guys. I rarely order delivery so maybe it's more just not understanding what they are getting paid. I think that's the big confusion with tipping. People want to take care of the service but they don't feel they should have to make the service persons' life. That the company they work for should be paying them a decent enough base that a couple orders doesn't make or brake the service person's day.

On a side note. Has anyone else noticed an increase in gay male waiters? I swear, it seems like whenever we go out to dinner or lunch and we have a male waiter, he is usually gay. Not that it really bothers me, as long as he is good at his job I could care less. Just pointing out something I have noticed.

I agree - I was a bartender/server for years as well. However - I don't think you "deserve" a good tip just because you're someones server. I can't stand that philosophy. People go out to eat to be "waited" on and shitty service doesn't deserve a great tip.

As far as the tattoo - on that expensive of a piece, you do not need to give 15-20%. Does this guy own the shop?

agreed. shitty service = shitty tip. everyone works hard, if you don't do your job, you don't get paid.

I thought before that there should be an automatic 10% added to the bill. Then if you feel they deserve more than you can add more. If you feel they don't deserve the 10% then you should talk to the manager to have it removed. That would also notify the manager of the problems so that the service can continue to improve.
