Tre Merrit bags 445-pound black bear while hunting with grandfather

DEWITT, Ark. — A 5-year-old Arkansas County boy killed a black bear Sunday weighing more than 400 pounds.

Tre Merritt, a descendant of Davy Crockett, was hunting with his grandfather Mike Merritt when a black bear happened upon their stand.

"His 10th great-grandfather was Davy Crockett," Mike Merritt said. "And Davy supposedly killed him a bear when he was three. And Tre is five and really killed a bear. I really doubt if Davy killed one when he was three."

Mike Merritt was in the stand at the time but said Tre did it all by himself.

"He came in about 40 to 50 yards," Mike Merritt said of the black bear, "and when he got in the open, I whistled at him and he stopped and I said, 'Shoot Tre.'"

So basically, the bear just came ambling along minding its own business and got gunned down. I just don't get this. It is one thing hunting for food, but what's the point of this?

A black bear too. It most likely would have gone about his business if they just stayed quiet and didnt bother it. I mean, if the bear is for sure coming at you, by all means, shoot the fuck out of it. but in this case, it just sounds like they wanted to shoot sumn.

The kid was up in a stand too. Not like he was getting charged down by the bear.... they could have shot in the air or something and scared it away if it was getting too close.

I don't hunt, but I don't see anything wrong w/people hunting if they use the meat. It may even be environmentally friendly in cases like deer overpopulation, but it is still sad. I know that slaughterhouses serve us, but I just prefer to think of "our" meat as coming from the grocery store...even if it is jacked up on hormones.

Here is the video from that. Yes, the bear is in it, so don't look if you don't want to see it, but the r&b radio station here in town was having a blast w/the grandpa saying "tears rolled down my cheek" this morning. They played that clip over and over and over.

I don't have a problem with killing a deer for meat. but killing a bear so you can brag about your grandson who will probably grow up and fuck his cousin is a different story. i dont think bears are overpopulated either....
