It started with a nail.....

So merry fuckin christmas to me. Here's the deal. A few weeks ago I get a nail in my tire, the air gets low, I get a patch in it. End of story right? Well this week, the tire goes low on air, so I fill it up. I check it a few days later, it is low again. So I'm thinking that the patch didn't take, so I take it to another guy today. He dis-mounts the tire, and comes out and tells me, "this tire is ruined. you have to buy another one." I'm like, what the fuck? turns out the people who did the tire the first time, messed it up. for those of you who know how patches work in punctured tires, you have to grind it down a little first. in this case, they were careless with the grinder and dug into the sidewall of the tire. apparently i was weeks or months away from having a blowout. considering more than half of my driving is done on an interstate, that woulda been bad fucking news. so now i have to wait until the day after christmas when this fuckin place is open and try to get reimbursed for the tire. more good news, according to the guy i took the tire to today, u cant just buy one replacement tire, you have to buy at least two so the tread is even and it will wear correctly. as many of you know, i have an rx8 with low profile performance tires which cost upwards of $200 each after mounting. so basically i am car-less till after christmas and i have to hope the original tire shop takes responsibility for their mistake. oh well, it all started with a nail in my tire.

Low profile tires don't last all that long - you probably needed a new set anyway. Merry Christmas to you. Jk - that stinks. But won't the first shop only reimburse you for the cost of the patch, if anything?

I have had this set of tires for a little over 10K, as far as I've read, these tires last close to 30K miles. We'll just say that since I have a "spirited" driving style I had at least 15K more miles left in em. The thing is, the first shop's incompetence ruined my whole tire. They are always talking about the quality of their work and how they always garantee good work, so we'll see.

Very true. Funny thing is, the damaged part of the tire had nothing to do with my air leak. If my air had not started leaking out of my tire, it would have been bad news for me. I got lucky in a way, but its just costing me a few bucks for something that should have been done right the first time.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

I've always heard patches are pretty safe, and plugs aren't. I can't really afford to get a new set of tires whenever I hit a nail. I do agree that I did get lucky finding out about this before it was too late.

PS2s cost alot, there are better tires for less money. there are even better tires that last longer for less money.
PS2 is a good tire though.

Yes they are expensive. At the time I had a little more money to burn, and I wanted the best. I think the next set I will be a set of BF Goodrich G-Force Sport. Much cheaper and I hear good thing about their performance on the Rx8.

ya I never rolled on thoes but I do hear they are cheep! I like the bridgestone REO1R thoes thinks kick ass for a street tire. I run thoes on my 19"HREs for track days. for my 20" cruzing tires I just ordered the new perelli P-zero witch I hear is very very good also. but I think for the price you probably picked the best tire. Im just curious how they work please keep me updated.

Thumbs up

Good news. Took the tire in today and the guy said he takes complete responsibility for the mistake and he is taking it upon himself to find me another tire. he said he is first going to look for a used tire since my others are a little worn, since it is best that the tread almost matches all the way around. if he cant find one he will buy me a brand new one. he was real straight up about it, and he seemed to be more upset that he did bad work than he was about having to get me a new tire.

The guy called me this morning and said, I got your tire. Brand fuckin new. I offered to pay for the mounting since he was so quick at getting me a new tire but he refused, and did it for free. just got it back home and put it back on. poor car has been up on the jack for 3 days.
