Debate on another Message Board: Help me win!!
Well, I am a moderator on the Health and Fitness forum at another site, mainly for teens and college students. I am debating with another mod there about a subject that you fellas would know about. I really think I'm right, plus this dude is a cocksucker. He always responds to all of my posts trying to prove me wrong. This time he is pulling out a bunch of graphs trying to confuse me and shit. What an asshole. Anyway, here are the basics:
-The original poster was a girl who was recently sick for 2 weeks, and went from 116 pounds to 108 pounds. She asked if she would eventually get back to her original weight if she started eating exactly like she did when she was 116 pounds. -I responded that she would because her body was maintaining at 116 the way she used to eat, so if she ate the calories that maintained a 116 pound weight before, then her body would again adapt. This little fucker once again started calling me out, saying that even if she ate the amount of calories that would maintain a 116 pound weight, the girl still wouldnt increase from 108 lbs. So he is basically saying that a 108 lb maintenance diet is the same at a 116 lb maintenance diet. Am I missing something here or is this kid the dumb fuck i thought he was?? He is trying to put her on some kid of bulking diet and this girl isnt even a lifter. she is just a normal girl who wonders if she will gain her weight back from being sick.

the only reason she lost the weight in the first place is because she was sick. thus, she started eating less calories and lost the weight. if she goes back to eating the same amount of calories that was maintaining her weight, she will gain it back.

the gain, if you were able to accurately track it would slow down as she regained her original weight as the calorie differeence with the weight would get smaller but yes, you are totally right. Why does she care?

This was the asshole's explanation. Does this make any sense??
In a maintenance diet, there is a range of, in the extremest case, of 250 kcals above and below the DRI in which the person won't pack on pounds. The difference between 108 and 116 is only 50 calories, which is easily within the DRI range of 250 (I would use 150 as a max personally). I'll make another graph if you want to see. Personally, this is easier to "show" than explain in words.

he is just trying to be difficult and say that she wont gain the weight back any time soon by only upping her calories by 50 per day. the problem with his argument is that he is assuming that she was only eating 50 more calories then she was when she got sick. i am positive that is not the case. she was more then likely eating 300-400 or more calories per day then when she was sick. you can end this argument quickly by asking the girls exactly what she was eating before she was sick and exactly what she was eating during the time when she was sick. i am sure the difference in calories is much more significant that he is assuming.

This was my reply. God I must be bored tonight.
"Ok well this is getting more complicated than it should be. The reason she lost weight is because she stopped eating. Her body reacted to the way she originally ate by staying at 116 pounds. Unless the sickness she had changed the speed of her metabolism, she will eventually return to her normal weight by returning to her original diet. I just reread the original post and she asked, "Once I start eating like I did before". Meaning she hasnt returned to eating normal yet. She only started eating again a few days ago, so she wouldnt have gained any weight yet."

Sickness has little bearing on homeostasis(with the exception of a few chronic diseases) homeostasis will return her to her previous weight with little effort on her part.

As nekra said, the body likes balance, and naturally maintains it. She IS going to gain weight back - may not be exactly 8 lbs, bit she won't maintain 108 if she is eating the same as 116 - duh. If what he's saying is true, she should continue to lose lol...

If you need help from us here, then why are you a mod there? You should be more confident rather than asking us for help for the win...lol...
