PDA?

I noticed that the stores don't really carry much. I looked at amazon and there are a lot of pocket PC's and stuff. I'm not really sure what's good and what is just flashy.

I have had PDA's and PDA phones and never ever used them. Don't know why.

My wife was wanting one that had the stuff like Word. The phones are around $300 to $500 and that's way to much.

With a new contract you can get some excellent deals on smart phones. The only problem then is that you have to pay the monthly fee to use them.

I was trying not to extend my contract. Right now it's in my grandparents name and once the contract is up we are going to put it ours. I know there is a monthly data fee, but she really isn't getting it for the online stuff.

it is an absolute waste of money. like has been said, the only way you are going to get one is via a smart phone. for someone that is trying to save money, that is just a stupid move.

you have a computer, use that for word and whatever else she needs.

You can get PDA phones without the data plan. I removed the data from my phone because I was never using the internet and I wasn't forwarding emails to it anymore.

The guy at the AT&T store said that you can get unlocked phones much cheaper through places like amazon or ebay. We are kind of looking at that. As for a pocket pc being a waste of money, it all depends on the person. Plus the pocket PC can connect to wifi without extra service and there is WiFi all over campus.

T-mobile AT&T Cingular GSM HTC Unlock MDA WING TOUCH Smart Phone

I saw this phone and in the specs it says wifi enabled. Does that mean it picks up wifi with no extra service?

the upper-end Dell Axim line is very nice. our doctors use them a lot to manage appointment times and approve transcriptions. the Dell's are pretty nice if you're not looking for a phone...

pocket PC's are king when compared to smart phones for document editing. smart phones are jack's of all trades, but the master of none. they're getting a lot better now though. i have a blackberry 8800 and a blackjack. the blackjack is crap, but i love the bb. when it comes to document editing and such - smart phones are worthless, so i understand why you have the need for a pda. have you considered an ultra-portable notebook?

We didn't look at portable notebook. I guess the best way to describe it, she would use it as a jump drive that she can work on anytime. She can't always run across campus to the computer lab that is available.

ultra-portables are generally sub 13". the most recent is the macbook air, but you could get much more bang for your buck by sticking with the pc side. you'll pay a bit more for a tiny notebook computer, but they're FAR more flexible. you can also get a portable fold-up keyboard for the dell pda's to give it more of a laptop feel. pretty cool...

as far as specs, you can find them over at dell's website. be sure to check out cnet for reviews and what not....

just go with the one that best meets your needs....

I know Bouncer will have something smart to say, but I can't find anything on the Dell website except a banner. I did find this though, so we are seeing if it's still available. DELL AXIM X51V pocket pc loaded w/ 2GB SD card - sale!!
