I think the main reason you see such a broad variance in the size of parking spaces in different regions is that local laws differ as to how many parking spaces are required. Most areas have ordinances that say that you must have 'X' number of spaces for every 'Y' square feet of retail space. So if an area has an ordinance formula that is more demanding, the developer makes the spaces as small as they are allowed to...to make sure that they can fit the minimum requirement into the space that they have.

Very true. I remeber this one time when I had my first car. It was a total beater. Anyway i'm in a parking ramp and the guy next to me parked so close I couldn't get in. So I looked at his car and it was all beat up too. So I took my door and opened it as hard as I could. I think that was the same car that left one of their doors wide open so me and my brother took out their cd player and hid it somewhere in the car.

No joke. Someone didn't like the way my rear driver's side quarter panel was shaped so they decided to cave it in for me. No note, nothing. The paint chipped down to bare metal and now I have to do something so it doesn't rust through on me.
The thing that gets me is that you know the kind of person who would do that and just leave would complain the loudest if it was done to them. Whatever happened to honesty and integrity? Geez.

bugs me when people park to close to me, then I have to be an ass and say, 'do you mind, mines a coupe so the doors are longer'

Ha ha I got one for you guys. So my buddy and I go to Wal-mart on our lunch break and hes got a brand new Jeep Overland....pretty badass car..anyway. He parks way the fuck out in the middle of the parking lot and we had to walk a mile to get in. We get out shit and leave and as we're walking out we notice a little piece of crap parked right next his car so we're like what the fuck, we're going to beat this guy for being a smartass and parking so close. Well as we approach we notice that its not parked next to his car its fucking parked inside his car. Some dumb ass motherfucker didnt put the emergency brake or put the car in gear before he went to Wendy's across the parking lot and the car rolled all the way across the parking lot and straight into my buddy's Jeep. I couldn't help but laugh at his ass. It was some serious bad luck. Damn that was a good one.
