"Dogs are a great judge of character"

I always knew there was some truth to this, but in the end thought it was just a phrase. But being at college and having so many different people coming in and out of my house, I am shocked at the things my little girl can sense. If someone comes around the house, she usually doesnt bark. Just like any other friendly pup she will run up to them and just want attention. But when "certain people" come around, who I've known for years as assholes, she will freak the fuck out. She will bark, growl, jump, you name it, to show her dislike for that person. The people don't even have to do anything to her, she can just sense the asshole-ness. Its tough to completely explain in a thread but it literally amazes me that she can pick these things up about people. I have never ever seen her bark and a genuinely good person and she will bark at every shitty person that walks in the door. Crazy! Has anyone done research on this??

Don't fuck with this one....

not to rain on the parade but dogs are amazing at picking up CUES from owners. so they might just be taking the hint from the owner on who is good and who is bad. (or whoever they are around). I watched an animal show that was pretty amazing on how dogs cued into their owners eyes for information.

You are right but half of the time she is out in the back yard and she will see someone out there. Its just funny because I know the person she is barking at and they are indeed an asshole. They dont even have to be doing anything or look funny, she just picks out the asshole-ness.

My dog barks at black people. Whether they are good or bad she doesn't care. I believe it is just because they look "different" from what shes used to. Some of my friends are black and some of the best people in the world, but she still goes crazy.

I think their might be an animal instinct to it all. I think kids have it too. My son is generally nice to most people which I think a lot of it has to do with our cues. But their are some people he gets around and he just holds tight to us, which is unusual behavior for him. He will also pick out hot women and say "hottie", which I partly taught him. He won't do it to every hot girl, but he also has never done it to an ugly or fat girl.

My Dad always used to make any boys my sisters brought home meet the dog before they could come in the house. Not all of them passed. Sisters were often mortified by Dad but, I thought it was cool to see those guys get scared or try to play it off. The ones the dog didn't like did not come back.

If my dog ever barks at a dude my daughter brings home he is out the fucking door. I've seen my dog be right too many times to ignore it.

My dog is very well socialized with other dogs and humans and is extremely friendly so if he doesn't like someone then it's usually because that person is a douchebag. I recently took him to meet my baby sister's boyfriend at a BBQ, after a few hours of running around he decided to take over the dude's bed when we weren't paying attention....he like's the guy so I'm cool with him now.

You know how dogs can sense fear? I wonder if it's the same with assholes. Dogs pick up on your physical cues, they can hear a heartbeat from 5 feet away and they pick up on the chemicals that our bodies produce during a fear response. Could the dog be picking up on both physical cues and chemical cues? One's attitude affects hormone levels and chemical responses in the body. I'll bet dogs can sense that. It's hard to fake a good attitude.

We had friends and I always thought the husband of the couple was an ass and they came over the house like at least once a week and my Annie - girl, she would bark and bark at him and not settle down the whole time. He would try and try to get her to even let him pet her. And she would run away.

Months later we had a falling out and you all wouldn't believe the stuff this guy has done or said to us (they live in our development) Stuff we've had to make police reports about him harassing us or my young children playing in the yard.

It's the truth about dogs reading people, from now on if she ever does that to someone who is at our house a lot like he was and she never lets up like she did, I am going to stay away from them.

Here's a pic of Annie - she is 1 and 80 lbs. so far.
