it's been a while since I fallowed the certification companies, but I know that afaa and ace are two of the oldest most reputable ones around, I am certified by afaa and I take continuing education tests every couple of years. Here are the links for both of them.

AFAA – Aerobics and Fitness Personal Trainer Certification & Group Exercise Certification

Become an ACE-certified personal trainer and maintain your personal training certification with the American Council on Exercise. Also offering, Group Fitness Instructor, Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant and Advanced Health and Fitness Spec

I would recommend going to the places that are like where you ideally want to train. Se what the successful trainers have for certs. Not that it will tell you which one is the best but in making your decision it will give an idea of what clients will recognize.

i have to agree with this !!! take some of what they teach you and build off of it --

i dont have any certs but do train certain people for comps -- i see alot of people with certs doing shit that gives no benefit to the client -- ask why - i always get thats what i was taught - which is a bullshit answer

take what you learn and build off of it -- cant take the cookie cutter bullshit that they teach you and fit it to everyones needs !! i see this all to often and it only leads to failure on your part as its your job to realize what your clients needs are .

a cert cant teach you that --

NASM. There OPT model cert was all the rage a few years ago. I'm not sure if it still is, but gyms in my area paid more for that cert

You should do a couple posts on some basic Krav Maga moves, I've heard its one of the best street adaptable combat methods out there.

Apparently works off the principle of keeping things real simple because unless your a trained fighter, people narurally get real nervous and lose co-ordination in a fight

Probably because you can't take the test without a bachelor's degree.

I agree with this also! The strength/conditioning coach at my MMA gym has about 8 or 9 certs on the wall he says they are just for looks. he dosnt follow any set cert. He has takin parts from all and made up his own shit off of other parts.

Most gyms will want you to have a certain cert to work there so find the gym and start with the one they want first.

Are you sure it's not just a cert and they just try to describe what you learn as being like getting a degree. Is it an accredited school, a trade school? I ask because it will matter if you have to take continuing education classes to keep it from expiring. Also, I went to a place to get mine (Cooper institute in Dallas) way back when and there were some gyms liked the idea of getting hands on training and not just studying a book, most wanted one that was nationally popular so the clients would easily recognize the name though. It's also difficult to try and filter through their theories or experience and what is physical fact.

You guys are insane - I don't think I've ever come out and said "I'm a personal trainer" (lol) but I'm pretty sure I have commented about having clients and how they've responded to diets/workouts etc - hell, I even had one girl I was working with on her posing and some fairly drastic last minute diet changes for the Arnold Amateurs this year (and she took 3rd in case I forgot to mention it )....
