Got me some golf clubs today...?
I got irons 2-9, PW, 1 and 3 and putter. I don't plan on going to a course anytime soon. I am going to go to a driving range down the street and just learn how to swing them. Is there certain clubs I should concentrate on or any I shouldn't focus too much on?

have you ever golfed before? if your going to a range, i'd say definitely hit a lot balls with your 1 driver. wouldn't necessarily have to touch your 3 unless you just want to get the feel for the different size head. probably want to feel out the irons too, and if you do, i would recommend not using a tee for those, since you wont on a course anyways.

Hire a golf pro and let him teach you the proper swing. Otherwise you won't actually be "practicing". Practicing the wrong swing is more destructive than not practicing at all.

You might as well toss the 2 and 3 irons, as you will probably never use them unless you are able to shoot in the 70's on 18 holes. Good luck, and like someone said, get some lessons early while you don't have any engrained bad habits. Making changes should be easy for you right now.

I have only golfed three times in about 5 or 6 years. So basically no I have never golfed. I can have trouble making contact with the ball. It's like $50 at that range for a 30 minute lesson. Is that a good price or should I get some people I know, that know how to golf to shoe me? The 2 and 3 irons just came with the set. I got all the clubs and a bag for $15 at goodwill.

Definately invest in lessons....any golf pro would rather work with a complete newb than someone who has been golfing with a bad swing for years, because it's much harder to correct bad habits than it is to work with a clean slate.

Don't listen to any of these guys Shib. Just go to the range and start out using your PW, 7 iron and 5 iron. Don't touch your woods or long irons yet.
Don't invest in any lessons just yet. Get used to hitting a ball first, then if you feel like this is something you'll start doing alot more get some lessons. Eventually you can start working into the woods, starting with the 3 wood. The biggest mistake anyone does is start using the driver right away. Leave it at home. Eventually once you get better with the 3 wood, you can bring the driver into play. If you need any tips or questions feel free to PM me. I've been golfing ever since i was really little and actually thought about becoming a teacher at one time.

What about taking it through the college? |

I didn't think about that. The college here has a badminton/golf class. I guess I could deal with one to get the other.

So we went to the driving range today. I enjoyed it and hit around 175 yards with the 3 wood, most all of them went to the right though. I was hitting about 75 yards with the 7 iron and those went at and ok straight shot. My wife kind of just tried out swinging the club and making contact. She's not sure what she thought of it. I really couldn't tell her much to let her get a decent feel of what it's like to play golf.

That's a good start Shib. If your wife wants to get into it you may want to get her a smaller club like a ladies or kids. All she would need is just one for now like a 7 iron.
Like I said if you have any questions just ask.

I think the clubs might be too small for her. She is 6'3".

Ok I take that back then. She's an inch taller than me and I need to have my clubs lengthened like a half inch. She should still be able to swing them, just has to bend over a little more than others.
