Boxing sucks!
i cant even watch it anymore. I am addicted to MMA. there is so much skill involved. i have to admit i didnt really get it at first. but now its probably my favorite sport to watch.
i was curious I know some of you guys fight - how do you train for this in the gym? ![]() |

I train just Jiu Jitsu at the moment, and my workouts haven't changed that much. I do more core work now, and I do a lot more cardio, but other then that I haven't changed too much.
I think YJ knows a lot about training for MMA. Let's hope that MMA doesn't go down the road that boxing did....the Kimbo fight was a sneak peek of the demise it could face.

The key is finding a gym that offers you many options. Its mixed martial arts, so if youre JUST training stand up/striking, youre in trouble. I have a lot of friends who train with no anticipation of competing. Thats how I started out. I have been involved with BJJ, Muay Thai (master toddy), a lot of wrestling and of course, boxing. After a 3-3.5 years, I realized this was like practicing football against your teammates but never playing a game.
If youre in NY, I dont know what part, but theres some seriously good gyms up there. Matt Serra and Renzo Gracie both have very large and very nice facilities up there. As for your question, I train BJJ Mon, Tues & Thurs, Boxing/Striking on Mon and Wed, Wrestling on Wed and Fri and Muay Thai on Thurs and Fri and cardio geared towards fighting about 3 days a week. I still weight train 3-4 days a week but its a more specific program now.

Boxing at its roots is still great. Go to any boxing gym in philly or Jersey and you will see the passion and skill these guys that we have never heard of have. Its the people in charge of marketing boxing that suck.

As YJ said there are gyms just for this type of stuff all over the place you just have to find the right one. The guy in the picture is here in Sacramento so that wount help but check a place called "Rino" to see if its in your area? I started just as a option to the tread mill and fell in love with it, as im sure you will to. |

It would be great to train in an old school gym in Jersey, talk about a dream. Do you have a couch I can borrow for a few months?

Boxing is still great, in MMA the general public are most impresed with the stand up bouts like Wanderlei and Liddell and get bored when it goes down. Boxing definately has its place, just a differnt challenge. just wish there were some great heavyweights around still

I would say that it is fun to watch when they are on the ground when they are actually doing something. You would have to admit YJ that it can be boring when the 2 guys on the ground dont do much but take a break and throw and elbow every 2 minutes or so.

Sure, but they also do that one their feet. I love a KO and striking, but the art of the ground game is brilliant.

Ya I dont care to much for it when one of the guys is a wrestler with no sub skills. But watching a jits guy on the ground is very entresting, If you understand it. they go from one sub attempt to the next just like a striker throwing a combo. and when they catch one the fight is over.

All in the hips, for me, finishing w an armbar is easier.
