just wanted to point it out because the media grabs on to shit like that and says "it was a near miss today" and people dont really understand that it was still 2 million miles away etc..

most of them on that link you posted will miss us on average by 80-120 million miles..
At least, you understood that it was close in-terms of the the relative size of space.

absolutely.

hell, the sun is 94 million miles away. and yet it only takes the light 10 minutes to get to earth traveling at the speed of light.

so just imagine traveling at the speed of light for a year. you would not even be out of our galaxy yet. and there are billions and billions of galaxys. lol. the scale is insane.

Yea when you start looking into stuff abut space it gets pretty unimaginable. I took a astronomy class and got to look at the planets through a large telescope,(don't remember the magnification). It was amazing to watch with your own eyes the storms on Jupiter swirling or look at the rings of Saturn pretty wild to see that stuff with your own eyes.

I would give just about anything to get to go out into space; It has always been an interest of mine.

It's cool to watch the videos when we first started going out into space and everyone made a huge deal out of it, which it still is in my opinion.

what i find most interesting is that when you were looking at the storm on Jupiter or thing rings of Saturn you werent looking at them live. you were in effect looking back into time. the deeper you look into space the longer it takes for that light to travel here. the further back you go the older the image. i cant wait for the day that we build a space telescope powerful enough to actually see the beginning of time.

Ha ha I was trying to explain that same thing to somebody a couple weeks ago and they could not wrap their heads around it. They could not understand that you are looking back in time when you are looking out into space. And that everything you see it just a reflection of light in essence, and since light takes time to travel; in essence you are getting the reflections of what something was back in time.

exactly. most people just cant grasp it. its kind of frustrating.

i guess the best way to explain it is the sun for example. the light you are seeing is from a source that is 94 million miles away. the light had to travel here over that distance. obviously light travels at.. the speed of light. traveling at the speed of light, the light from the sun take about 10 minutes to get here. so in effect you are looking at light as it existed 10 minutes ago.

now if you look at something that is double that distance the light would take 20 minutes to get here and you are looking back into time by 20 minutes. so on and so on.
