I agree. I almost bought a highlander last year too. I don't see how they can recover from this- I mean, who would even buy one?? And they also saying, that even once they fix the car, it's still accelerating on it's own.

american cars are making enough good progress on their own. they will be fine. ford, Chevy, and most of the GM lineup are making good quality cars for the first time in a long time.

Chrysler.. well that company needs to be tossed in the fucken garbage. they still have no clue how to make a car that looks like anything anyone wants..

It's really the fact that people acted like toyota's were god's gift to humans; and just like all the other auto-makers they tried to cut corners and now look like the jackasses.

cant argue with that.

but i do feel bad for the workers at toyota in America who had nothing to do with any of those decisions to cut corners. it would definitly hurt the american economy if toyota went belly up.

Forget Toyota. Chrysler's got the most problems.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The car company that is off to the worst start of 2010 isn't Toyota. It's Chrysler Group.

Industry experts say that even though Chrysler's overall sales are down only 3% during the first two months of the year, estimates show more than half of Chrysler's sales have been to fleet customers, such as rental car companies.

American consumers have essentially turned their backs on the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands. By some estimates, the once proud member of America's Big Three automakers fell to No. 7 in February in terms of sales to U.S. consumers.

Chrysler's sales to consumers have plunged more than 44% so far this year, according to estimates by industry tracker Edmunds.com.

I call bullshit on all these 'my accelerator is stuck' attention seekers dialing 911, its total baloni, if you put you foot flat on the accellerator and then slam the brakes on, your car will stop and stall, alternatively clutch it or shift to neitral on an auto box and thats it no power going to the wheels.

I know two families that own lots, one new/used and one all used.

Neither will accept a Toyota in trade now at all and they both said many dealers are starting to do the same. They said even the ones not included in the recalls have just been sitting on the lot eating money, fucking things won't sell now.

100% agreed. That's all it takes to stop a run away car. I drove about 70 miles with my dad's 1972 Opel Rekord gas pedal stuck to the floor. It was a stick shift car so every time car hit about 75-80mph I shifted in N turned the ignition off and let the car coast, once the car came down to 50mph I turned ignition on(don't start the car) put the car in fourth gear let the clutch go.

It was the exact same car.

Dealerships here are giving you an exrat $1000 bonus if you trade your toyota, scion, lexsus or acura.

IDK what kind of cars you drive but my vehicles will over power the brakes; prius prolly wouldn't though; in regards to putting the car in neutral the prius has push buttons for gear selections and on the news they supposedly said the car would not go into neutral when he pushed the button.

The other car companies should be working hard to grab some market share back.

I believe it, my friends dad's old work van the throttle would get stuck if you floored it, then you had to reach down and pull the pedal up.

I don't like how most new cars are drive by wire, I am comforted by the fact that older cars actually have a cable linking the throttle body/carb to the pedal so if something did happen you could at least pull on something to get it to un-stick.

The thing is though that these cars are automatics not manuals.

No way mate I'm not having that for a minute!

no factory car has an engine that would over power the brakes, just maybe if the car has been modified by some douche that didn't balance by upgrading brakes etc but even then you slam all on and that thing is stopping. Now, if you ride your brakes for ten minutes half applying them while the accellerator is flat to the floor then maybe you could have a problem but what kind of fool would do that and not just slam on when they realised there was an issue, hey wanabeabeast!

At 90 miles an hour with the throttle stuck wide open you are gonna burn up the breaks before you stop the car; all you gotta do is get them hot enough to glaze over and its all over. Of course at a stop with no momentum you can over power the engine but not at 90 especially in an auto-magic.

maybe drums, not disks, you hit the brakes hard, the car is stopping, sounds like you need to get some proper brakes mate

Maybe over-sized performance rotors and ceramic brake pads; but not the stock rotors and crappy organic pads i'm sure that are on that prius. Things prolly burnt right up.
