66 percent of US adults overweight. 75% by 2015.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...nt_6409482.htm
LOS ANGELES, July 20 (Xinhua) -- With the obesity level in the United States continuing to climb, 75 percent of American adults will be overweight and 41 percent of them will be obese by the year 2015, a new study predicts. In the study, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that the prevalence of obesity and overweight in the U.S. has increased at a median rate of 0.3 to 0.8 percentage points per year during the past 30 years across a wide variety of socioeconomic groups. As a whole, the U.S obesity prevalence escalated from 13 percent in the 1960s to 32 percent in 2004, according to the study. The research team noted that there was a disproportionate increase in obesity levels amongst minorities and low socioeconomic groups, including non-Hispanic black women and children, Mexican-American women and children, white women and black men of low socioeconomic status, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans. "The obesity rate in the United States has increased at an alarming rate over the past three decades," said Youfa Wang, assistant professor in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "We set out to estimate the average annual increase in prevalence as well as the variation between population groups to predict the future situation regarding obesity and overweight among U.S. adults and children," he said. Wang also cautioned "Obesity is a public health crisis. If the rate of obesity and overweight continues at this pace, by 2015,75 percent of adults and nearly 24 percent of U.S. children and adolescents will be overweight or obese." They also found that in 2003 and 2004, two-thirds (66 percent) of the U.S. adults were overweight or obese. Women between the ages of 20 to 34, have the fastest rate of increase to be overweight or obese. Eighty percent of black women aged 40 years or over are overweight with 50 percent being classified as obese. Although Asians have the lowest obesity prevalence when compared to other ethnic groups; U.S.-born Asians are four times more likely to be obese than Asian nationals. The study was published in the latest issue of the journal Epidemiologic Reviews.

I just can not comprehend how would someone let themselves go and be fat...I'd like to see a survey to see who's really motivated to look and feel better...That number would be pretty high...You need a lot of motivation to do so.

My doctor's charts say I'm obese and I would venture to say that even little Rado would be classified as such too - I'm sure their outdated system for classifying these things may skew the numbers more than they would like to admit...
Still - fat bastards would an understatement for what most American fatties have allowed themselves to become - but don't forget that some people come here to remedy that problem and often times do with our help so we can't slam an entire nation all in one fell swoop or it'll never get any better - I'm a firm believer that education is the key and it starts with the school system IMO.... |

some do come here for a remedy yes, and i take my hat off to those ppl, its the ones who are too ignorant to understand the dangers. They eat their fucking fried chicken and then they feed their 5 year old kid the same fucking thing, then by the time the kid is 13 they weigh fucking 250lbs, and then they wonder why. IMO its the laziness of the average person along with all of the luxuries and convieniences we take for granted that have made ppl this way,

![]() That's the whole reason children need better information than what they're being given - and that includes WAY better than what some states are proposing that still goes off of outdated information based on an even still archaic food "pyramid" AND bringing back scheduled exercise/recess in school and physical EDUCATION.... |

i agree you would have a harder time changing parents minds than the childs, tho i think that the child (a young child) is influenced more by their parents, in the end they are the ones raising the child, they spend the most time with them, and ultimately they are the ones feeding them and buying the food.

You know, my hubby would be considered overweight too. he's 6' 200lbs. He's an athletic looking guy, I don't think he could ever be 175 or under! He'd look like he was sick.

Most muscular guys on this board would be classified as overweight. The BMI scale does not take into account body type or muscle content.
Since this topic has been brought up, anyone watch the Shaq Challenge that has been coming on? They take 5 or 6 morbidly obese kids and help them lose weight. The reason I bring this up is because FH said it's education and schools where it needs to start. I agree. But interestingly enough, on this show they couldn't get a schools help for shit. The principal said in order to have a mandatory PE class, they would have to add an additional 45 minutes to each day costing the school system hundreds of thousands of dollars. They aren't real concerned with killing our youth, but in saving money. Then they had Tyler Florence, the cheif, cook a healthy lunch for everyone. All the kids threw away the veggies. When the principal saw this she stopped him from cooking and said they couldn't afford to through away this much food. So they went back to the greasy lunch menu. When the hell did they take PE out of schools? I always thought that was a given......

Consider this. Back 200 years ago, if you wanted fresh water, you grabbed a bucket and went to the well. You might even have had to go all the way down to the river. If your clothes were dirty, you took them down to the river and washed them by hand. You raised your own animals, you planted and harvested your own crops and you made the stuff you needed. There was no fast food, there was no Little Debbies, there was no soda or hotdogs or processed food. Food was real food, it was fresh and it was natural. People don't actually "work" anymore. Can you imagine how much healthier people would be if they had to perform manual labor in order to have food to eat? Back then, if you didn't work hard, you lost your crops and starved. How much stronger and healthier would we be if we had to split wood to heat our houses in the winter? What if we didn't have time to sit around watching TV or playing video games? Back then, people had to physically work hard to survive. We live in a country where we have more than we could ever need and it's killing us. One woman who was once morbidly obese said that when she started controlling her diet and loosing weight, she felt this strange sensation that she hadn't felt before. She realized it was hunger. She said how shameful it was that she had never felt hunger before in a world where millions of people have never known what it's like to be full.
