Whey Protein cause water retension?

So I went to the doctor today because for the past year or so I have gone through stages where I piss constantly. 3 or 4 times an hour on the bad days. We got to talking about my diet and medicines I am taking. He couldn't figure anything out from that, since I dont take any medicines (just a multivitamin) and my diet is pretty clean. I drink water 90% of the time besides juice and milk, mainly in the morning. He couldn't figure much out before I mentioned that I take whey protein shakes. He asked how long I'd been taking them and I said, about a year (about as long as the superchared urination). So he told me to lay off of the shakes for a month and see if that has been causing the problem, as it is possible that they were causing me to retain water. Anyone heard of this before? I didn't think whey protein could cause this kind of thing. I am going to start taking meds for overactive bladder if it doesn't get better in about a month, the doc just wanted to eliminate some other possibilities first

Anyway, now I was wondering what I could eat or drink instead of the whey. I know after a hard workout, not much is gonna be as affective, but is there something that comes close? Thanks for the help, feel free to ask questions if I didn't make something clear.

NOTE: The whey protein was the only thing I take supplement wise, so there aren't any other supplements that could cause this kind of reaction.

Have some egg whites (no yolks), that will do just as well.

Water retention means you hold more water. Diuretics(sp) make you urinate more. I'm trying to understand the conclusions you and your doctor have come up with. I have never heard of whey causes more urination. I have heard of excess protien causing gas and such. Maybe...your bladder is being compressed from increased internal gas? I don't know how feasible that is.

What he said might be happening is I am retaining water for a while, and then my body senses the extra water and flushes it out all at once. That might explain why it happens in stages every few days instead of every single day. Like I said though, it's just an experiment to make sure we rule out some variables before I get on any meds.

Control was saying he's not the biggest fan of post workout shakes anyway. If I rememberright it was mostly because if you rely on the shake for all of your nutrition for the hous just after lifting, your not getting enough food. Just eat a good balanced meal after your workout and you should be fine. Also, did you consider that you just drink tons of water. I pee all the time now that I eat and drink water almost constantly.

I would not forego a post workout shake. The whole idea behind the post workout whey is to replenish your muscles as quickly as possible after destroying them. You don't want to waste any time digesting whole food. Have a shake immediately after workout, and a full meal a half hour to an hour later.

Update:

It has been almost a week without a protein shake and I'm still pissing constantly. Doesnt seem to have changed at all. Just a few more weeks and I'll be able to drink all the protein I want when he gives me some meds.

Yeah, we talked about that. I told him all my symptoms and my patterns and he said it sounded much more like an overactive bladder than anything else. After we talked for a while he didn't even see a need for a prostate exam. Plus I'm only 19 so I'm a little young for that. Had to test for diabetes and take a few blood tests for kidneys and liver. They all came back good so he is pretty sure it is just bladder spasms.
