I've known guys that smoke weed and still look like bodybuilders (although most of them look like skinny hippies with pot bellies).
I just read a magazine article the other day that said (paraphrasing) smoking weed every day is not such a bad thing for a body builder. Weed supposedly drops your test levels, but the study that was done showed that the drop was so minimal that it made no, but the benefit of daily blazing, increased hunger of up to 40%, well out weighed the downside. I am not promoting this nor do I follow this advise, I just thought that it was interesting.

my understanding was that the increase in hunger associated with weed was an acute affect and that cronically it actually lowers your appetite. I remember having chubby friends in high school who later became pot heads and turned into twigs. in response to the 40% increase in hunger comment, realistically you have to consider what kind of foods youre probably going to end up eating. if you get high i dont think your going to go running for some rice and chicken breast, but rather some hagan daaz and pepsi. you also have to consider what persistant pot smoking does to your respiratory system, liver, brain function and overall crispness; marijuana contains 400 more toxins than cigarettes, not to mention how it destroys your motivation and determination. i know you didnt write the article but i dont know how anyone could argue that pot helps bodybuilding.

in response to mindstars comment, you can get almost all of the health benifits of drinking wine from grape juice or cranberry juice. ill also ad that i cant possibly believe that weekend drinking erases a weeks worth of efforts- that sounds a little too much for me. my training partner is a university football player whos built like an ox from training and this guy drinks lots aswell as taking in other recreational drugs. however, his training and diet are immaculate; he creates training programs and diets for other athletes.

I still tell myself -- even looking at football players who drink like fish on the weekends -- imagine what they'd look like if they didn't drink. I just don't really care for it (alcohol) when I'm training. I don't want to put stress on my liver that won't come with some nice, hard muscle gain. I don't want to spend $20 on beer or mixed drinks and wake up the next morning with a headache, not feel like training, and realise I'm out of ($20 worth of) glutamine. I don't want to amass all the diet advice I can, spend hours putting everything together, cooking, then get wasted and realise everything just canceled itself out

Yup, that's where I read it. I didn't go into all the details of the article, but mostly summerized.

You're probably correct, but couldn't you just surround yourself in only healthy foods so you had no other choice for food? Even premake the food every few days so when you are stoned, lazy and hungry you can just heat and eat.

[quote=Jordan]i know you didnt write the article but i dont know how anyone could argue that pot helps bodybuilding.

The article I read was in the December 2005 issue of Muscular Development, page 296/297. It is an interesting article if you can get your hands on it.

Anyhow as I wrote before, I do not promote this nor do I follow this advise, I just thought that it was an interesting concept/ article. I did not go indepth (obviously) into the points in the article, there were both pros and cons of cronic pot usage. I just noticed that the increase of up to 40% in hunger would be something good for the people having hard times consuming their calories.

I know I'm going to get heat for this, but as far as I'm concerned if you consume excess amounts of alcohol or smoke marijuana at all you have no right calling yourself a fitness enthusiast, let alone bodybuilder. Bodybuilding is about bringing one's body to perfection- far from the effects of marijuana or alcohol.
