before i go scour the net for an answer; i can't recall if this was just something your parents told you in order to get you sit quietly at the dinner table or what. i think i remember reading somewhere that it made no difference to eat standing versus sitting. i'm curious cause i just finished a rather large lunch while working a shift today and i was standing the whole time. wasn't able to get back into the break room.

Its a diet tip, most empty calories are eaten on the run, i.e. grabbing snack food and eating without realising it.
The suggestion to sit down when eating, makes you more aware of what you are eating and how much of it per sitting. Its easy to keep grabbing a handful of nuts or chips as you pass the bowl and not even realise how many you have eaten, hence the don't eat while standing up suggestion. Eating when sitting down, helps you to see how much you are eating and hopefully helps you to eat less. Its the same as the "don't eat while watching TV" suggestion, as you can eat a ton without even noticing it. I can't think of any physiological reason for digestion being different when you stand or sit. |

My friend always used to stand up after eating because his dad said it helped digestion. Gravity is on your side that way instead of laying down. Dont know if it actually makes a difference.

i couldn't find much on the net other then to "promote family time" - i didn't spend too much time looking though. my "standing" lunch was tuna, tortilla strips, and water - so not soo bad. i'm not sure if i felt any gravity come into play, at least not while i was at work.. but later that night when i was at home, well...
