Best Source of protein

Is there one source of protein that is considered to be better than others? Chicken, red meat, fish, whey shake etc.?

Why? I always thought protein was protein. I understand that the whey will absorb faster but other than that, why is one better than the other?

YJ is joking.

There are faster and slower absorbing proteins but one is not better then the other. Slow is better at night and fast is better after a workout ect..

The best protein is a mix of a bunch of different sources. Chicken, beef, fish, whey, Casein ect..

I know you'd be going out of your way, but could you prove that for me. Im having an arguement with one of my friends and this is what Im trying to explain to him. Hes trying to tell me that some proteins are better than others and that whole food is better than shakes for building muscle. I dont need medical journals, I just need something to help explain.

Well some proteins are better then others in certain situations. But to make a blanket statement and say "chicken is better then all other protein sources" shows a lack of understanding.

In most cases, whole protein sources are best. But after a workout, whey powder is best. No whole food can be absorbed as fast as whey.

But why would you say that, in most cases, whole protein is best?

Whole protein is best in many cases. You think Ronnie Coleman put on size drinking shakes all day? Again, they have their place. They are best after a workout. So in that situation they are best. Basics bro, our bodies were designed to digest whole food. Protein powder is called a "supplement" for a reason. They are supposed to supplement our diets.

the reason whey protein shakes are only better than whole food after workouts is because they are quick at getting to your muscles when they need to be replinished quickly. whole food is better at all other parts of the day because it is slower digesting and more of it can be absorbed by the muscles overall because it doesnt pass through your system as fast. not to mention the extra nutrients that whole foods have that protein shakes dont. i doubt u will find anyone who will have the patience to lay out an entire scientific explanation so id do a search on the internet and find a scholarly article on the subject or something. im sure they are out there.

its common knowledge. here is a little scientific test for you. dont eat any whole food meals. drink 7-8 shakes a day for a month and see how far that gets you.

I'm actually tempted to do that. Alot of "common knowledge" is just stuff that's been repeated over and over again, doesn't mean it's true.

Some protein sources are complete protein sources and some aren't, meaning some protein sources have complete amino acid profiles and some have a limiting amino acid. For example grains lack lysine, which is one of the 9 essential amino acids ( isoleucine, leucine, lysine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, histidine, valine and phenylalanine). Legumes lack tryptophan, but they have lysine so the theory is that you can combine them with wheat or rice and get a complete protein.

Among protein sources that have all 9 essential amino acids, eggs are considered to have the ideal amino acid profile for conversion to muscle mass. The have the highest BV (biological value).
