Raising HDL

my father has blood work done every 6 months due to his high cholesteral.
The past 2 recent blood work results that i saw that his HDL (good cholesteral) were very low, and he was bitchin and complaing y that was. He is working out 5 days a week, but his diet is the issue.
He eats 2-3 times a day, very slow metabolism, he used to force himself to stay hungry. His pwo meal is fruit *NO PROTEIN AT ALL*

OK, what foods can he eat naturally that will raise his HDL???

His sad sad diet:
6:15am - one bowl of oatmeal in milk, 1 fish oil capsule

1pm - 1 apple and orange (sometimes banana or grapes)

4:30pm - ~8-9oz basmati rice, ~4oz chicken, ~5oz steamed carrots and broccoli

Around 8-9pm he also eats small snacks here and there like a piece of corn bread or Belgium Truffles

Throughout the day he drinkin tea, nothin but green tea

Well I am pretty sure that healthy fats are what raises good cholesterol. Stuff like Olive Oil, Avacados, Almonds, Natty Peanut Butter, and Fish Oil. I see that he has one fish oil capsule in the morning but I doubt one capsule a day will do anything. As far as his diet, it needs a lot of work too but as far as raising good cholesterol that's what I'd say. Any more opinions because I am by no means an expert.

he has pretty much zero fat in his diet. i am sure he thinks that is healthy but its just the opposite. he needs to increase his fat intake.

Regardless of how good the diet is...You need some sort of cardio to raise HDL...Walking is good enough...

i think if his dad just raises his fat intake and that is the only change he makes, his HDL will raise a bit.

True...But at his age...He needs his HDL to be high...This way if his LDL is not good, his ratio from good/bad will balance itself out...You can have bad LDL and high HDL(good cholesterol)and Dr's will like that combo than having low HDL and high HDL...Somehow having high HDL can help a person out who has high LDL...

stop blithering. bottom line, he needs to increase his fats as the first step. second, as we all know cardio is good for everyone so of course that would be recommended.

Yes his diet is HORRIBLE, my father is very stubborn and i have told him many times to eat every 3-4hours, but he won't
He does cardio everyday than lifts weights

He is also taking blood thinners and BP meds becuz he had 2 stents put in about a year and a half ago
He is 58 yrs old (f that helps) No prob wit excersing, just his left knee will bother him after about 15min of running
His job is sorta stressful, he is a civil engineer, and was recently promoted and now has more people working under him (and some of them r complete retards and don't know what an inch is)

since he is already doing cardio then his problem like i said is fats. he needs to eat more. eating every 3-4 hours really isnt the issue with him. you could print out or let him reads the one of millions of articles or studies talking about the importance of fats for health. if he wont listen to science and reason i am not sure there is anything you can do.

O ok, i talked to him some more and i was like "Look dad, there is a solution to raise ur HDL cholesteral. Its not ur excerise its your diet" i told him to eat peanuts and almonds and have at least 1 pb sandwich (preferably pwo). He agreed and will try it out for a bit

One thing about him is, he is very natural eater. Does not believe in protein shakes, creatine shakes, multi-vits, etc... (so givin him a pwo shake is out of the ballpark)
he says its not natural and it will cause liver failure. He only takes fish oil and his prescription meds

I appreciate all ur help, EVERYONE, i will diff be tellin him what and what not to eat, and the importance of good fat

yea, dont worry about the protein shakes or creatine or any of that for him. he is not interested in bodybuilding or building muscle and that is fine.

being a natural eater is fine. his diet even though you may think is horrible is a hell of a lot better then most slobs in america.

stress the importance of things like Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Avocado, Almonds, Pecans, and even a minimal amount of animal (saturated) fats. those are all natural and essential for health.

dna, try to get him to raise his fish oil dose also. that one capsule in the morning is doing almost nothing. all the studies done on fish oil were using dosages 10-20x's that amount. i am not saying you need to tell your dad to increase his dose 20 x's but try and get him to take 4-5 caps a day instead of 1.
