Vegans
I have a friend who is vegan and she just started working out - she's very new to the game. Anyway, she is attending a boot camp sort of workout program, and the instructor has recommended protein shakes to everyone. She sees me drink my protein shakes every day as well, and decided that she wants to give it a shot. She brought a packet of protein to me that was soy based and asked me if it was okay. I have no experience with vegan protein sources. Does anybody know anything about this? Is a soy powder the best protein supplement for vegans?

Soy isn't the best protein choice, but I guess if she's limited there isn't many other options for her. I know there are different types of vegetarians, so is it that she won't drink whey?

Yes, she won't eat any animal/egg/milk products.

I guess soy is pretty much her ONLY option then.

I figured it probably was. With as many different whey products as there are, I wonder if there are different soy products as well - different bioavailabilities etc...

If you are vegan, there is basically only one major protein source - legumes. These include beans, lentils, etc.
As far as drinkable protein powders are concerned, you have soy protein and hemp protein. You can get hemp protein at natural food stores - I tried an unflavored version and it smells like freshly mowed grass (and tastes about the same), so not very appealing although maybe the flavored versions are better. I am lacto-vegetarian and my diet includes significant amounts of legumes but I think it is going to be difficult/impossible to ingest the levels of protein a serious bodybuilder would consume on a vegan diet without subsisting largely on soy shakes.

I found a site called veganfitness.com. Somebody mentioned a product called Ultimate Greens Protein 8 in 1 by Olympian Labs. It has rice, hemp, & pea protein.
