Marinara sauce I found...

So lately I have been dying for italian food. Pizza chicken, spaghetti, anything. So I figured I'd go take a look in the pasta sauce section to see if I can find anything decently healthy. Well, I look at the back of all the labels, and sure enough, ingredient lists a mile long, and all of them with at least 13 grams of sugar per serving. The last one I looked at was Gia Russa marinara. The ingredients are all fresh. The list is as follows word for word:

Ingredients: Imported Italian plum tomatoes, imported italian olive oil, fresh onions, fresh garlic, fresh basil, fresh parsley, salt and spices.

Best of all, only 2 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup!! The fat content is 9 grams due to the olive oil, and sodium is just over 300 mg. So yay or nay on this sauce? It just would be nice to throw on the chicken every once in a while to keep my sanity. Thanks!

That's pretty good. Some of the olive oil may even be burned off when you cook it, which would lower the fat content even more. What brand is it?

The brand is Gia Russa. It really tastes better than Prego, Ragu, etc.

Marinara

Marinara is easy I make it all the time....

4 cups (one 35-ounce can) San Marzano Italian plum tomatoes or crushed (easier)
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
7 or 8 fat garlic cloves, sliced (about 1/2 cup)
1/4 teaspoon dried peperoncino (hot red pepper flakes), or more to taste
Hot water from the pasta-cooking pot
1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
1 stalk or big sprigs basil, with 20 or so whole leaves

1. Crush the tomatoes, break them up into small pieces (with your hands)

2. Heat oil into the big skillet, add the garlic slices in the oil over medium-high heat. Cook for 5 minutes.

3. Add the crushed tomatoes and peperoncino. Add a little salt. Add some water about 1/2 a can of the water (optional)
Raise heat to boiling Cook for 10-20mins.

4. Add 20 basil leaves (shred them with your hands first). Cook for another 5-10 mins on simmer.

sauce from scratch is amazing and when done rite does take a couple of hours but very worth it.
when it's under cooked it's raw and thats just not good also premade stuff is an insult to food
