lactose vs. fructose
Ok, so I'm trying to get my girlfriend into the whole nutrition thing. She feels she needs to have fruit or yogurt every day. Whatever...
So, from a carb point of view, which one is better for your body? I know yogurt has more protein in it, but try to think just about the lactose vs the fructose. Thanks. NMK |

In moderation they are both okay. To get someone started on a good plan, make exceptions. Women need extra calcium, so yogurt is good in that regard.

Right, but what about lactose and fructose? Which carb is better for your body?

Fruit isn't 100% fructose, have her stick with pieces that are higher in fiber. Lactose isn't necessarily bad either, intolerance should be more of a concern. Dietary calcium has actually been shown to be more effective in fat loss than supplemented calcium.

Lactose, although a sugar is very low glycemically. Fructose will refill liver glycogen before muscle glycogen, just an aside.

See that's what I thought too. I hate arguing with dumb people about this. I always get the "But fruit is natural, so it has to be good..." Ya, the 'herb' is natural too!

I'm quite sure the fat epidemic in America isn't due to over-consumption of fruit. |

No no no, dumb people as in my girlfriend and friends who say fruit is a MUST have in the diet because it's natural.
And I agree, the fat epidemic isn't due to fruit. So if you were to have fruit in your diet, what would you stick with? Apples and banannas? Quote:

Not saying you didn't know this but table sugar itself is half fructose. |

Apples, strawberries, NOT bananas.
Personally, I would eat the fruit rather than the yogurt. specifically because of the fiber content. I find the more protein I eat the more fiber I need too.

is yogurt really that bad? i eat fat free yogurt with some all bran cereal every morning to get my metabolism running. The yogurt itself contains about 16 grams of protien and about 25 grams of carbs. the cereal adds about 10 grams of protien and the carbs are pretty much all fiber so they dont really count. is there anything wrong with this? i didnt know that yogurt was under critisism. by the way, i start my day with an hour of light cardio before eating (im cutting). peace,
j

fat free yogurt and fresh fruit are sooo good for you. Especially yogurt because it has calcium in it and women really need that and we rarely get enough.
