Giambi Subpoenaed by Grand Jury in Steroids Case
Giambi Subpoenaed by Grand Jury in Steroids Case
![]() The Associated Press October 20, 2003, 8:29 AM EDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Yankees slugger Jason Giambi says he is among the athletes subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating a company that prescribes nutritional supplements for elite athletes, according to a report published Monday. Before the second game of the World Series on Sunday, Giambi told the San Francisco Chronicle, "Uh, yeah, I was," when asked if he had been subpoenaed in connection with the probe of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, or BALCO. Giambi said he visited Burlingame-based BALCO last fall before going on a tour of Japan with other baseball players. "I just asked about some vitamins and supplements and stuff like that," Giambi said. "No big deal." BALCO was raided in early September by agents of the Internal Revenue Service and a San Mateo County narcotics task force. Authorities have refused to discuss the case, and the focus of the grand jury is unclear. Officials with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, however, have said that earlier this year, a coach sent them a used syringe containing a designer steroid and said he got the substance from BALCO founder Victor Conte. Conte, who told The Associated Press in an e-mail that about 40 athletes have been subpoenaed in the case, has said he was not the source of the substance in the syringe, a steroid called tetrahydrogestrinone, or THG. Conte says BALCO analyzes blood and urine samples from athletes, and then prescribes supplements to compensate for deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. Its clients have included baseball's Barry Bonds and sprinter Marion Jones. Although many of BALCO's star clients have not commented on the burgeoning case, the agent for U.S. shot put champion Kevin Toth told The Associated Press that Toth had been subpoenaed, and sprinter Kelli White told the Chronicle she too has been called to the grand jury. Testimony before the panel is expected to begin this week. Copyright © 2003, The Associated Press |

IMO Giambi is one of the many players that looks like he has " used" the sauce in the past. I wonder what other players will get drawn into this drama. I believe Bonds has already been paid a visit.

Yes, look at Sosa he just looks alot smaller. The loss of the 'roid edge might explain the cork.
This is the first year baseball tested for 'roid and the home runs numbers fell big time. But 'roids are everywhere in pro sports. Then everyone tries to deflect the attention. People need to grow up and realize big brother cannot possible control certain aspects of life unless they take away basic freedoms of each individual. Anyone see ESPN "Outside the Lines" last night? They talked to some guys, one being from the USOC, and he tried to say some shit "Its all about the children... junior high and high school". The war on drugs. Its a joke. But not too many people are laughing. :rantoff: |
