when it comes to getting engaged to someone you love. but if say you were really presented with something like this

I would say it depends on his current financial situation.....
If your not satisfied by that size ring, and that's all he can afford then he's probely not the guy for you ....

The reason I say this is, if it's about LOVE then the size or cut should not even be an issue, the ring is a symbol-it's not a binding contract-it's a symbol, the only glue that keeps people married is lOVE no matter how rich or poor.....

I guess that depends on who gave it to you.

My wifes engament ring is tiny. I was in the Marines at the time and brought home less than $600 a month so I couln't get any thing real big and nice. She loves it still the same, wears it everyday and has even told a few people off for saying it was small.

I agree with the financial situation problem. If your man doesnt have a lot but has the love for you to present you with at least SOMETHING, than thats acceptable. But if you know he's pulling in 80k per year, then he should be able to afford something bigger.

But I think it would be rude either way to make a fuss over the size of the ring, I would be embarassed to do that.

ps)how big is that diamond, and how much is it worth?

My engagement ring was small but it was in a beautiful unusual setting which we picked out together. Stromba wanted to buy something bigger, but I didn't want him to spend the money. He's since bought me several diamonds and this Christmas I got a princess cut diamond in a custom setting made by a friend of ours...it's beautiful and I'm thrilled with it, but my first little diamond will always be the most special and dearest to my heart. Everytime I look at it and wear it I just get a warm emotional feeling which grows stronger as the years pass. An engagement ring symbolizes a promise of commitment between two people...the bigger the stone doesn't mean any bigger of a commitment, it just means a bigger bill to pay off.

The fact that you asked this question is impolite,.. to him anyway...

If you love the person and want to spend the rest of your life with him then this thought should not have even crossed your mind IMHO.

Now if he is filthy rich and gave you that, then yeah you can throw a hissy fit...But then that would mean you are after one thing from him and it is not his heart, and he will know it when you do.

I mean no disrespect but....I do not think you are ready to accept it if you have to ask this question. I kind of feel bad for who gave you this..It was probably the hardest thing he did in his life and you only see quantity over substance. Just my opinion, no harm meant.

THE DAY GOD CALLED YOU HOME
God looked around his Garden
and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his
earth and saw your loving face.

He saw your path was difficult
and he closed your weary eyes,
He whispered to you "Peace be Thine"
and gave you wings to fly.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
on the day God called you home.

It is not the size of the ring that should not matter it is that thought taht he loves you enough to give you a ring and want to spend life with you. is money is tight you can't expect a different ring and if you really cared for the person it really wouldn't matter

I really don't understand why someone wouldn't be thrilled to get that ring if it was given to them by someone who loves them. If they weren't happy to get it, they probably don't deserve one in the first place.

that's a quarter carat and i think it was like $300 from walmart.

i know it's silly to ask, but i was just browsing walmart's jewelry section and saw it and the question came to me.

when i thought about it, i almost felt as if i'd rather not have a ring if it were going to be that size. i'd rather just wear a wedding band, never realized i was so shallow

no ring was given and no proposal is in anywhere near the immediate or even medium range future.

like i said in the post above, i was browing walmart's website and looking at rings like that spurred the question.

it was kinda like that episode of sex and the city, where aidan was gonna propose to carrie. it wasn't even necessarily about the ring, but about knowing who she is almost.

if he can't afford a ring, i'd almost prefer not to have one and just get married at city hall and have my wedding band on without an engagement "diamond".

but no worries, no poor asshole is getting shafted by me, i'm just trying to stir convo here - seemed kinda quiet in here to me :p

Sana...this thread is bringing back lots of memories for me!

My diamond was not bought at Walmart, but our wedding bands were bought at K-mart (14k, not 10k LOL) and we got married in City Hall, had a one night stay in Cherry Hill for our honeymoon and then Stromba had to go back to work while I set up our new appartment...barely any furniture, no couches, just pillows on the floor and a small TV and record player in our living room. The only room that really had much furniture was our bedroom...a round bed that I brought with me from home with unmatched dressers. That first Christmas we still didn't have furniture but we had borrowed my mom's Christmas tree, which was huge and it took up about a quarter of the room. We didn't have much but we sure were happy!

I know what your saying my parents paid for our wedding with some help from hers. They did a real good job for what they could pull together.
our honeymoon was a day at Bushgardens. We young and flat broke. We bought a mobile home from a freind who was being trafered to a new duty station. A three bedroom. The only furniture we had was a futon, a couch my grandmother gave us, a bed that was a wedding girt from my sister-in-law, and a dresser. for the few monthes I was still in the Marines we lived on Ramon noodles and PB&J.
We didn't have much but we had each other and that made us happy.

Thinking back to those times is nice sometimes I forget how it was back then and we take what have now for granted.
When I get home Betty is getting a big .

I hear ya. I've been married for 14 years now and it just keeps getting better. We were married with a very small candlelight wedding. We had a 20 piece Chicken Mcnuggets for our Wedding dinner and our Honeymoon was in a Ryder moving van bound for Washington State from Vermont. I wouldn't change a thing today.

Gotcha.....It just seemed that way from the post...lol...Whew!!...I was really feeling for this supposed guy I "thought" you were talking about. I still feel that it is all good when someone is expressing love...Even if it is just $300 at Walmart....BTW...Good job stirring things up....lol.....

I'm sitting on the chair and Faith was giving me and a couple of others lap dances and stuff last night. Her ass was red but she was asking for it harder. 2004 is off to a good start!
