Shin splints?

My lower legs have been sore, on the front outer side, about 2 inches from the shins. I've never had shin splints, so I don't even know if that's what this is. My only guess is that it's from the calf exercises. How would I effectively stretch that muscle?

EDIT:
While I'm on that subject, I might add, that when I wake up in the morning, and walk to the bathroom, a muscle in my foot always pulls. It's sounds stupid and it's hard to explain, but it basically gets really tight and I can feel it pull my outer 2nd and 3rd toes.

Do I just need to be stretching more? Or drinking more water?

yep I stand by what I say in my post in that thread. if you need to stretch it just put pressure on your toe.

That's wierd, I ran a search for shin splints and that post didn't even come up, I wouldn't have wasted time with this post otherwise. Thanx guys. The link was helpful.

Thumbs up

It's probably your shoes and/or the surface you run on. Alsphalt and concrete tracks cause too much stress. If you can, try running on natural surfaces. BB

I don't run, mostly just weight training, only about 10 mins of cardio a few times a week just to get the blood going. I noticed the pain was strong the day after calf raises, so I'm going to lay off them for a few days and stretch good. Thanx though.

Godd shoes / inserts may also help. I was having shin splnts, lower back pain etc. I bought some better shoes and bought a good pair of inserts . it made alot of difference. most shoes have those 2 cent insoles in them, go on and drop 10 or 20 bucks and get some decent ones.

That's not a bad idea I guess.

Also, I haven't done calf raises in a week and my shin splints have been gone 5 days. Maybe I was increasing the weight too fast or just overtraining. I know I need to stretch and drink more water too.
